My wife bought a end of year 2012 M3 and ended up doing about 170K on it, it had the 6 speed manual turbo diesel. Extremely zippy and not too many dramas with it. In that time, the dashboard cover was replaced 10 years later free of charge as it started to lift up, needed a engine mount and then the same one had to be redone (replaced under warranty). then lastly one of the hand brake mechanisms needed replacing. A couple of the usual things, brakes pads, batteries and tyres and that was about it. We ended giving it to one of my daughters as we replaced it with a Kia Sportage diesel and it is still going strong.
My wife loved it and didn't want to give it up but as we are both getting on in years it became a bit harder for us to get in and out of it and so needed a bigger car. The only other things I had against it was that it could have been a bit quieter, but that could have been due to it having a turbo diesel and the GPS mapping system wasn't big enough. it was very economical about 4.5l/100km on a highway run with loads of power if you needed it. I am in Australia so don't have any issues with rust because we don't use salt on our roads. We owned it for about 13 years.

After another two overpriced tatty but lower mileage cars we went back to one we saw three weeks ago that was in very good condition but higher mileage (96k)
Advertised at £5795 the dealer didn't want to budge on price other than knocking the £95 off so we agreed to that, then my boy had another look at Auto trader and the price had been dropped to £5495 in the last couple of hours
My boy still asked asked for the £95 off and he agreed
The car needs a new battery as it looks like the original Japanese one with screw on caps and Japanese writing!
The AC doesn't work and a tyre or two is almost on the wear limit.
I need a look at the brakes and give it a good going over but hopefully it will be ok.

That's actually the cheapest one we've looked at.
One was 8.5k for a 16 plate car with 51k on the clock, all scratched and dented.
There's nothing under this sort of money unless it's a cat S and they still want 5k+!!!
This one looks pretty straight, it's a 65 plate.

When we were car shopping for Mrs Robo, she picked one and took a pic so the salesman inside could identify it, we got down to the £££'s and he said there's £100 off today so it's £xxxx, mrs Robo said "no, the screen price is £500 less" and showed him the pic so he had to recalculate and she got £600 off his original figure

I measured the battery voltage last night and it came up at 12.7 volts after standing for half an hour, I reckon it might do him for a while longer yet
Definitely needs one new tyre asap and the front speakers are blown
Looks like I can't get a real paper manual for one of these cars so will look for a downloadable one.

Nope mine came without, which I dislike, so found and bought a spare alloy wheel on ebay for 60 quid, matches the other 4. My wheels are 16's anyway.
It fits in the boot with the foam block removed. Its currently sitting in the garden waiting for a repaint, along with an ancient cracking tyre on my rear left, and a newish Falken with a puncture sitting in the garage awaiting repair.
On an unrelated note, my miles per tank went up a lot last tank! First tank since I did the rear pads and unsiezed the calliper sliders. I usually get ~350 to reserve light but this was 418 and not on reserve when I filled up.

Bought a downloaded Haynes manual online and found it to be utterly useless! £28.
Basically all you get is a load of torque settings and a few exploded diagrams. All the repair sequences are just generic ones with Mercs and Renault etc in the pictures.
It doesn't even show you where the handbrake adjuster is!
We're complaining to Haynes as I think it's bordering on fraud!

I did the same for my Ford Focus as I hit a pheasant a few months ago, cracked a plastic grille behind the bumper and took out a sensor - Haynes described the only a manual as containing information on bodywork repairs... it didn't.
Fortunately I'd paid using PayPal, so submitted a refund claim as goods not as described; it took a few weeks but I got a full refund.

It's not a good one by Haynes. Though I do wonder how much of what they can actually do is constrained by "make adjustment to handbrake following this procedure, now fire up £2000 worth of software to toggle handbrake reset switch in the ECU"

I have a hunch that societal constraints have had an impact on Haynes; firstly, cars have become more and more complex to the point that owners are less willing to service and repair themselves and, secondly, that current generations are far less interested in getting their hands dirty. Ergo older cars and older generations still happy to get stuck in so a roaring trade in the older Haynes manuals!

I think you're right, people don't fix their own cars anymore so there's less of a market for repair manuals but it doesn't mean Haynes should do what it's done here.
Anyway the boy has his money back and he's got the £200 refundable deposit back from the shyster car dealer.

I've just checked; I still have access to my 'subscription' even after getting the refund... I did get the refund from PayPal themselves though, after I'd raised the dispute - and won.

Had the rear brakes off yesterday and found one very worn pad and no shims on one side of the car and on the other side one pad with three shims on it! Gave the calipers a good clean up and lube.
Does anyone know where I can get the shims from, or a decent UK/ European parts diagram with part numbers? I've tried but can't find one.
One of the pistons was a bit tight and almost fully protruding but seems ok now we've got it back in, adjusted the handbrake as there was about 15 clicks on it before it did anything!
Oh yeah Haynes if you want to know
the adjuster is under the centre console!
