I still use my trusty slide rule for solving dead hard sums. Those of you old enough might remember the days before electronic calculators came in. Well, you can relive them here:

The examples are fairly simple but give an idea how a slide rule works.

N.B. The Pickett N 600 ES was the slide rule used by the Apollo astronauts for the Moon landings if any emergency calculations needed to be done.

I thought before the "electronic" calculator was the mechanical calculator. The ones with the sliding/notched digigets and a hand crank to answer the calculation. ps never used a slide rule bit before my time.....

I used to repair the Burroughs version of the Comptometer, as well as their adding machines.

I remember those had cranked calculators, we had one at my primary school.
