If you can save maybe 30% in your efficiency gain, from a basic steel box to an efficient brick lined stove with a few features, that could translate to saving £100's of pounds in logs over a few winters or a few gallons of sweat splitting, or hours of time you could have been making an efficient burner in the first place? And save the planet as a bonus! All food for thought.

As someone who has burnt free wood for 40 odd years in stoves, with no other means of heating, I have never worked out how a stove can burn efficiently on days like today when a little background heat is nice but a bigger fire would mean opening the windows.

A good stove will have an efficient working range of 40-100% output, its still possible to have clean, good combustion at a lower output temp.
A well designed stove will have this kind of range.

The fire breast and stack was the thermal store until a couple of years ago, all masonry thoroughly warmed through, then we had a chimney fire, this cracked the breast right up the middle, installed flue liner, so no more thermal store and fuel usage for same room heat went right up![/QUOTE]

I can appreciate where your coming from Gritineye-liners do destroy the effect of a heated chimney, unless they are backfilled with suitable material. Now one of these would answer all your problems...All masonry and firebrick never too hot and all about background heat. Cost a good few grand though.

I'd like to build a big TLUD stove based on gas bottles. Other things to do though right now.

I made a little tin can one and its quite clever.
