Dreadful........hopefully the workforce market will change and stop these repressive ways some firms choose to use....its almost Dickensian.........I cant believe how well we were treated in comparison. Back in the 70s the Steelworks set you on, paid you, paid for you to be educated and then rewarded you when you became qualified.....how times have changed....and not for the better.........I really hate this race to the bottom philosophyCan't blame the help..its like Halfords, they employ kids just out of school or college students trying to earn a buck, basic training and minimum wage, but people call them thick, most of don't even own a car .
My kids worked from an early age , paper rounds in knee high snow, then,in a local Marston's 'gastropub' treated appallingly by both management and customers.
My daughter was earning under four pound an hour as a waitress, zero hours, she could turn up and if it was not busy or too many staff had turned up they sent you home or asked you to sit around unpaid until it picked up in an hour or two.
If it went quiet you sat around again unpaid until it picked up again.
I usually went and brought her home, but some kids didn't have soft dads so they would pay four quid bus fare to get to work to be told they weren't needed,or have to work late and miss the last bus so spend on taxis, I usually ran about four kids home around midnight.
Tips were all handed over to head staff to be divided by the hours you did, the amount never tallied,if a table walked out without paying that was stopped out of tips.
Customers who were buying two for one bargain basement microwave crap food acted like they were in a five star Michelin restaurant and blamed the teenage staff for thier cheap choices, had teenage girls in tears .
This is the same situation for an awful lot of people in various retail and service industry jobs ,I find it very depressing when supposedly educated people mock people doing Mcjobs.
They are out there working, for low wages ,poor management and snide ,insulting customers.
Don't blame the help.
Healthy rivalry is usually a good situation for all involved. Easy wins lead to laziness which is probably the current status. And why are the unions toothless?
Maybe a ruthless programme of destruction of source industry ?
Im not sure about the University debt thing....they dont have to pay it back until they are earning enough and it doesnt count on their credit rating....on the other hand it was designed to stop kids going to Uni and do stupid subjects, get ****** for 3 years all paid for by the state. Personally I think there should be some incentives to do degrees in subjects that are needed by the country...eg a Doctor is free, a Scientist pays only 50% but someone doing History of Radio One pays 150%. I guess that would probably cause some division so could never be allowed these days.
The Unions these days are absolutely toothless so they are of little use. Maybe brexit will stop the influx of cheap labour and redress the balance. It might also make managers look for better ways to do things rather that take the easy way out and choose to go down the low pay route.
correctSadly i can see the coming...and then.
