Manual grease gun.

I am going to need one for the boat, my workshop ones are pneumatic. However most grease guns I have tried are absolute rubbish and so would appreciate recommendations (or offers of a good, used one) please.

Do you want a manual fill or a canister? I have only old ones which I have found pleasant to use. Tecalemits and Wanners mostly. Small push ones for awkward areas and pistol grip ones for the bigger jobs. I don't like the two-hander types. New spares fit the Wanners as the design is still currently sold, e.g. here. Just make sure the jaws are correct for your nipples - metric or imperial, if buying secondhand. There's some difference in engagement angle I believe, so the wrong one won't seat properly.

If you want the best then alemite. Closely followed by mcnaught. They are expensive but work better in every way. The alemite pistol grip has 2 settings. High volume low pressure and high pressure low volume. Means you don't need a leaver type as well.
Alemite are the OEM manufacturer for CAT grease guns and mcnaught for John Deere.

Is there much to grease on a boat Might be worth looking at the fixed remote grease pots and distribution blocks.

I hate lever ones. Leaning under something, needing one hand to support your body weight, but needing two hands to operate the gun is just problematic.

One hand operation is a must in so many instances. Also one of those lock on connectors with a thin enough tip to get to the Uj nipples on an axel...

Edit - the one I use here is a draper expert one, which is a fair bit better than all my others (which, admittedly, isn't much of a claim to fame!) With a cheap eBay 3rd party locking end.

You can get them pointy grease gun ends (proper name?) for flush nipples, but they also work on std grease nipples just by putting the pointy bit into the ball bearing on the nipple, pretty decent for LR propshafts etc.

I find a lever type gun with a solid metal hose to be the most superior. You don't have touch anything greasy, you stay much cleaner and you can push it onto worn out nipples with far more force. Never come across a piece of machinery that this setup won't work with either. Sometimes you might have to adjust something to get to everything that you wouldn't have to with a Flexi hose but yet to find an impossible one.

Go to a motor factors. Or plant dealer, machinery dealer, tractor dealer, Country store. If it's one grease cartridge i don't think price is worth worrying about.

Proper Tractor and machinery places should stock equivalent specifications. They might not have large quantities but should have something.

Indeed it is. In particular for the swivel and steering cable shaft.

Any grease is good in this application.

Buy a cordless electric grease gun is what we did, but for one boat I wouldn't bother.

Thank you Mat, that's helpful. I can use it for my car's trunnions too, if need be.

Big late now but if you see a Wanner grease gun going cheap , give one a go . Little one handed jobbies are normally less than £5 at car boots/auto jumbles .

The 25044 is the same stuff according to their data sheet (just different langauge on the packaging?) and is cheaper and quicker to get:
