Manchester Power Hacksaw - help?

I have an old Manchester Power Hacksaw, not used it since we moved into this house. It's got a couple of issues, can anyone direct me to some resources?

It uses a canvas drive belt from the big driver wheel, connected to a small wide cast iron pulley driven from an electric motor via v-belt. The canvas belt slips so badly it's unusable. Previous owners have added layers of gaffa tape to add friction on the small driver.

Is there a good supplier of canvas 2 or 3" belts?

Also there is no damper spindle - the oil pot is there, but nothing to go in it. Are there any diagrams of how this part works?

There are around 4 to six holes drilled through that "ball". The sprung plate adjusts how much oil can flow through them. The adjuster rod, right of oblong shaft, screws up/down to open/close the plate.

Cheers! So that "ball" is a close fit in the bore, the oil only travels through the holes?

Yup. The ball is simply a sliding fit. That makes the oil have to travel through the holes.

Regarding flat belt, search for balata belt.

Ball shouldn't be too tricky to machine, even a piece of brass, it's not going to have a hard life

Going back to the 2nd pic, is there a spring on both sides of copper washer please?

No. The spring is to press the plate against the bottom face. There's a threaded hole to the right of the oblong shaft, which that rod then screws through, hence forcing that side of the plate away from the ball's face.

I used to have an old Manchester hacksaw that "required" a flat belt. The old boy I bought it from used a vee belt turned inside out. It worked perfectly, keeping track and no slipping.

I'm all in on Balata belt now LOL

If that doesn't work, v-belt is easy to get, cheers!

i think theres a light spring washer goes over the bolt holding the washer against the disk with the holes in it persoaly i dont bother with it on mine the blades last ages even without any back stroke relief .the ol;der saw bows are rather light not like the heavier newer ones

Pretty sure mine just has a V belt.

Ive owned it for years, and use it periodically - the fact that i dont know for sure what belt it has implies its been entirely trouble free!
