Unless I've missed it, we don't have a thread celebrating/commiserating the sort of self-inflicted stupidity that's common to workshops across the land.


For my part, I trashed a CGMT insert earlier, by forgetting to remove the hardened set screw from the aluminium pulley I was boring out.

Made worse by the fact it was power feeding at 0.48mm/rev & 3200 rpm using the feed trip, so each pass took about 2 sec giving absolutely no chance to react, mangling (but not irretrievably) the boring bar it was on too.

To date the worst I have done in that regard is snap an 8mm boring bar whilst trying to "just quickly" do a job on an (inappropriately large, totally unfamiliar, but physically present) lang lathe... Despite it's age, the dial read in mm not thou, so my conservative 0.030" pass was in fact 3.0mm.

I replaced a CCMT insert that wasn’t cutting. New one didn’t cut either, and broke off.

Then realised the lathe was set to run backwards for a previous job.

Many pullies have 2 set screws stacked on top of each other, this has caused me
multiple problems in forgetting the second one.

4 batteries, 8 terminals.
I was 1mm away from mixing up a black wire. With a un Regulations red crimp onto the positive terminal.

fitted recently fully tested set of replacement diesel injectors , one had a scewif cap(socket) stupidly thinking its just been tested , now pulled all apart top end to replace the squiffy one...did know better , just not thinking ...

yep this had me confused once boring out an Aluminum pulley and wondering why the boring bar kept jumping...ruined the work and taught me well about the 2nd grub screw buried there.

I got so annoyed with a DB gearshift that I got up from the seat and booted it. Broke it off. Eejit.

I was trying to get a MF35 off a trailer, it was the 3 cyl diesel and a bit of a bugger to start. The battery it came with was dead, so I used to jump it off another slightly less knackered battery, it would usually go with a following wind and a bit of Easy Start.

Not this time though. Cranked and cranked but no dice, spare battery now flat as well.

The stupidest mistakes always happen when you're in a rush, I had an hours' drive ahead of me to return the trailer before the hire place closed. Never mind trying to start it, I'll tilt the trailer bed up, roll it off and deal with it later. Get on, gear in neutral, brakes off. Tractor rolls 18 inches and stops, right on top of the coil of jump cables I'd left in the way.

There's now no spare length to reach the battery in the tow car, which was going to be the next step. And I'm not getting off and trying to push a 1.5 ton tractor over the lump, I'll never catch up with it before it demolishes my neighbour's front wall.

Unhitch the trailer, turn the car round and park it alongside, teetering on the edge of a 4ft ditch, so the remaining bit of jump lead will just reach, and try again. Still no joy... hang on... what idiot left the stop handle pulled out?

For those who were concerned amused about my faux pas, will be pleased to know that the clutch is fine and I manage to do some mowing today.

That was after the engine died halfway up the field. This time I had forgotten to turn the fuel tap on. This then requires the fuel system to be bled, so it was a long walk back for some spanners
