Man cave roof......

The time has come for the cave roof to be renewed - the original felt [which wasn't the thickest in the first place] is splitting and allowing water to be blown in with the current spate of storms.

My initial thought(s) were to cover it with profile sheeting [I'll be getting someone local to do it as I'm not as fit as I was ], but a pal who used to be in the building trade sent me a link to this stuff. I wondered if anyone e.g. @roofman had any experience of using it as an alternative - he reckons the profile stuff will be hellish noisy in heavy rain. What'd you reckon, lads?

Not decided on colour yet, this'll give you an idea though.

Not recommended by me at all, looks similar to Onduline used that on two sheds and both haven't lasted due to sagging and spreading which tears the fixing holes.

dont slim better off using a metal roof like @Burdekin used instead

its only noisy without insulation but if you use the cold roof method it isnt a problem

the sheets are expensive if you cant get hold of used or seconds though but are worth it

What about that steel agricultural corrugated, stuff with kingspan for insulation as well.

Probably not cheap.

I’ve used Onduline on my kennel roof. It has been spot on, no sagging, no rips. Been up for ten years or so. Had the roughest of weather chucked at it and still got years left in it. Rough weather being straight off the Atlantic. Used a cheaper copy of it and it’s not so good, thinner and less tuff. They use Oduline in NZ for cladding houses in very exposed areas, the reviews I read were very good, hence why i used it.

I have an onduline roof on my shed, been there 16 years and is good bar the ridge sections at both ends cracked where they fold over onto the gable - cheap to replace. I also had a couple of transparent polycarbonate sections -they went brittle with age and have been replaced.

Downside is without insulation, you get condensation and drips.

I was just in the process of deciding on a roof for my being built man cave,

I looked at the rubber edm, looks ok, and I will probably fit it to the flat part, of the shed nthat adjoins it,that or fibreglass, though the rubber is looking favourite, as it’s easier to fit, and not as weather dependant

For the other roof, I did look at plastic roof tiles, including special shed tiles that come in a metre long strip, to shingles, felt and onduline, and metal roofing,

But in the end I opted for concrete Marley double Roman tiles, because it was no dearer,

Tiles bought for £1.05 a tile delivered including vat, 10 tiles to a square metre, so with dry ridge and eaves, and membrane and latte all in Under £20 a square metre

It helps that the roof is 4x2 and at 25 degrees though,

The problem with roofing superstore is the delivery charges,

My yesterday order of two packs of double Roman tiles I got for £1.05 per tile delivered, but from roofing superstore they were £1.09 plus delivery which on two packs was another £80

My shed is is onduline, as are our alpaca shed, all but one have osb underneath, and no issues at all. The other one unboarded has sagged a bit, but is still ok.

I've used epdm rubber on 4 roofs now, granted all but one was essentially flat.
Easy to fit and supposedly long lasting. I'd use it before most things these days.

Used it for the first time on a shed at the previous house where the felt lasted under 5 years.

Last use was on my ManCave roof, well roofs actually, main section flattish with a lean-to end section.

I covered my flat felted roof with Kingspan sheets with 70mm insulation in them, if your roof has a slope, you can put them straight on to the existing roof, I wanted more fall on mine so I did it this way. You can buy second quality, and there are
Dealers who sell used sheets too. Just fill the old fixing holes with silicone.

I cheaped out with Wickes bitumen type corrugated sheeting on a stable block/shelter in the field, the wind got under it and dumped the whole lot about fifty meters away

That bitumen stuff sags when its hot.......the add on bits make it expensive....you cant walk on it.....its not very strong either.......

EDPM Rubber is expensive.....pond liner is cheaper and just as good but the piece I needed was too heavy and cumbersome for me..

Ive used the glass fibre reinforced roofing felt......cost me about 300 quid and the roof is 32 feet long x 16 feet wide.....only problem was that the felt is only in 8m rolls....so too short for a full length........I overlapped them alternately and slapped plenty of bitumen underneath...

Bitumen sheets have never been laid by me as i have seen too many sagging and destroyed by lack of UVA protection. For a DIY toe in the water to flat roofing then UPDM and some correct edge trims are the way forward...No flame or harmful materials if you use the water based glue as a bonus

This is a apex roof - the plan is to just batten the roof over the existing felt and fix whatever sheets seem the best suited.
