no no, this is me being a wuss. trying to mitigate risk
The grinder is an 18v 5" Festool and the discs are new DeWalt DT42340TZ Stainless Steel Flat Cutting Disc, 125 mm x 1.2 mm (although marked as SS im using for 2.5mm mild steel)
Totally the other way for me, iam happy cutting anything with a grinder normally a 9" but those metal cutting saws with sharp chips flying everywhere seem far more sketchy
Interesting thread. I have been considering the 12v Milwaukee 1/2" impact wrench because of size and weight.
I have the Makita DTW1002, which is the 18v LXT 1200NM one but it's heavy, like proper heavy. And it's huge so it can't get into tight places.
Of course I am invested into the Makita battery ecosystem....
Worth getting the Milwaukee? I don't see an equivalent Makita with the short tool length, not in 18v anyway, so it would be 12v and that also means new batteries. Can't decide.

99.9% of the chippies I come across use Makita tbh, the ones feeling flush use festool.
Milwaukee popular with mechanics, sparks, plumbers etc As is makita, dewalt. etc.
Lot of builders are dewalt or makita.
Metabo engineering/fabrication
Hobyist DIY (or somebody fed up with their van being done) Ryobi, Erbaurer, Parkside, Ferrex, Worx etc
Not that it means anything, I think people just buy the same as their peers when starting off.

Fair enough but in many ways a grinder is safer. Perhaps try to get over that fear. I used to be the same but now its not a problem.
People have lost fingers to circ saws, a very easy mistake to put the other hand where you shouldnt, and you wont know until its too late.
What are you cutting, have a pic of how it was being held?
Plasma may be a good alternative if it doesnt need to be portable/cordless. Quieter, witha guide or template can get good straight cuts.
For new tools, particually those needing higher power, I would suggest look at Makita XGT, yes its a new and expensive battery system, but the performance is significantly better than their 18v kit, even than the dual 18v kit and a single battery is much lighter.
They had an offer for free batteries recently and I got 5 out of that from buying new tools, ended now but suspect they will have other offers.

Cordless grinders are great, they have come on massively and are very convenient - but its one of the few power tools I wouldn't want to be without a corded version IMO.
Just for the power, speed and runtime.
Quality grinders have all sorts of safety systems, but wear the correct PPE and get familiar with the quadrants of the grinder and which part of the disc you should be using to avoid kickback and how to approach the work to avoid pinching the disc - these are the biggest issue for accidents and it is down to people misusing or misunderstanding the machine.
Like any tool they can be dangerous, but with proper care and attention they don't need to be, and they are a very versatile tool to have.
Haven't been out to the garage yet but it's a 2.5mm, 1m x 2m sheet of mild steel cut on a concrete floor but raised an inch with bench cookies, probably not ideal.
Was just cutting a 6" x 1mm strip for coupon practice.

I've got that DCS553Z metal-cutting circular saw and it's fabulous. I really haven't got a bad thing to say about it. I was amazed at how easily it cuts through sheet or box section and it's a far cleaner, quicker and more pleasant way to work than having to use an angle grinder.

The milwaukee grinder is good, had mine for years, must have used hundreds if not thousands of discs.
Every now and then open gearbox (4 screws) stick a bit of fresh grease in.
Must be Fuel model.
Must have paddle switch.

I agree with you, but one of my main reasons is weight. With a decent capacity battery on the cordless one, it's a lot heavier than the corded one.

I now have a Non-Fuel M18 impact drill, a impact driver (a kit), m18 torch (purchased bare) and their Fuel grinder with rapid charger, all with 5 amp batteries.
I used to own Dewalt old style cordless but because the batteries died, I changed over to Milwaukee , my work supplied Makita tools in the workshop.
Personally even if I run Makita tools atm, I'd still be tempted into buying the red one, mainly because I believe at the moment the top brand is Red and with the range they have its impressive...

to clarify a few things, I also have a corded 115mm makita angle grinder, not just a cordless.
It seems there is an even split between red and teal? red being more powerful and a wider range and teal being slightly less powerful but more reliable. as for red being on top, I think that perception is probably because they throw a huge amount of tools at "influencers" on the social media. also I have the teal TD173 impact and it smashes anything else out the park, including red
so lets say teal wins this, i wondering if the 136mm will be more than enough for my purpose considering im not looking at anything over 3-5 mm and of course its half the price of the 150mm saw.
