Makita Cut Off Saw

Picked up a cut off saw cheap today and need to get some blades.

Where is best to get them or what brand would be best? Is it possible to change them to a TCT blade like the rage saws? My assumption would be no due to rotation speed.

When you say cut-off saw, do you mean a metal-bladed one meant for metal or an abrasive chop saw?

Let us know the Makita model number please.

All blades these days, whether wood-cutting or metal-cuting are TCT tipped.

This has been discussed before on the forum so search well and you will soon know chapter and verse on the subject.

In brief, there are three issues: the bore of the metal-cutting blade is different to that of the wood-cutting blade. This is fairly easy to overcome either with a bush or by boring/reaming. Second, the speed of the metal cutting one is slower than the wood cutting one. Some higher end saws have variable speed so this can help. The other thing you can do is fit a smaller blade so the surface speed of the blade remains approximately the same (if you do not know what surface feet per minute means, please ask for further clarification). Finally, some thought needs to be given concerning where the hot chips will go.

Thanks for the reply, it's a Makita 2414B so an abrasive chop saw.

It takes a 350/355mm disc, 24.5mm bore. The no load rotation speed is 3800rpm, this seems to be far higher than comparable TCT bladed saws and beyond the recommended speed for TCT discs.

Aren't most abrasive chop saw's 305mm. .....? Not sure of the rpm tho......

Not as efficient or pleasant as a cold cut mind.

I wonder how well the abrasive saws are built in terms of spindle run out, bearings etc. compared to cold cut or mitre saws. To me, abrasive saws are a much 'rougher' tool than mitre saws. The pivot, fence and clamping arrangements are much cruder.
