Makita cordless drills

I’m thinking for getting a new drill - I already have Makita 5.0ah batteries and charger with my 115mm angry grinder, but am a bit confused by their terminology. I’m looking at the DDF484z and DHP484Z, one is listed as a Combi drill and the other as a drill driver, but what’s the difference?

Combi drill usually has hammer, never used it but the drills are usually chunkier and feel better built

The Drill/driver won't have a hammer mode for masonry, the combi will.

Too slow.

Driver is impact. Designed for wanging screws into wood fast and has a hex qr
Drill has a Chuck and for general use.
Unless I'm drilling holes I've got the impact in my hand.

Rare I tend to use the impact nowadays. For whacking frame fixings in, they're invaluable. For driving into wood, prefer to just use the driver, unless it's a really hard hardwood or suchlike.

Depending upon how much you use it, some of the slightly older design with a brushed motor are a lot cheaper and have more torque, I have a few of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Makita-D...322403?hash=item5d96f0ce63:g:CQYAAOSwiJRd0~1~ and they are great, I do not know how much drilling it takes to wear out the brushes but they take the abuse I throw at them without problem

Driver on the combi is not impact, it is clutch controlled driver

Anyway you cant go wrong with a makita
If your 115mm grinder is eating batteries think about changing the carbon brushes and it's plastic support.
I changed them on mine 3 months ago, cleaned all the dirt and metal dust from the motor and it runs like new.

We've done 3 sets of brushes on one of our old makita grinders... moved on to brushless and the power difference is unbelievable. Using 5ah batteries on everything.

The variable speed version is awesome to use with a big wire brush or paint removal pad. I'd highly reccomend a variable speed brushless replacement, if you get to that point
Since getting it, I don't think i've broke the corded one out at all!

Another vote for the same grinder - I use a DGA 463z, which usually gets used in favour of the corded ones.

The 481 is the one to go for, great drill.

All their drills seem ok too, I use a few of theirs.

I have a Makita drill, and a Makita impact driver. Building my workshop I used the drill to drive all the screws in, as the repeated drrrrrrrrrrrrr of the impact drove me up the wall, and probably all my elderly neighbours too. The drill appears to have more torque actually.

I call them my Wickita tools, as they are Makita bodies with Wickes batteries wedged in. They work very well, as the original batteries died several years ago.

They generally do. If you ever have to remove a tight fixing, screw etc., for example, the drill will usually outperform the impact.

The reason I reach for the impact. They seem to stay seated in the pozi/philips head better. Especially when removing old screws.

impact gives ease of work, drill gives much more torque... if you go for the higher torque drills be sure to use the side handle on tight stuff or big drills, they can seriously mess up your wrist
