Makita cordless drill

Hi

I was just wondering has anyone else been having problem's with these. I have now had to sent one back and it's replacements chuck has now broken.

They haven't been abused really and done that much work I would say . Its a Dhp456 cordless the white one . On the other hand the cordless grinder is one of the best tools I have bought.

It's just a wee rant really .

A friend of mine had early battery failure but they were replaced and no problem since. The drill itself has been abused but stood up to it well.

I've got three pre lithium ones and other than the original batteries getting a bit tired they have been trouble free.

I think Makita (DeWalt and possibly others) dropped the ball when they made the move to Lithium batteries. they seem to have cut corners in many aspects to keep the price down (or maximise profits) The new drills just don't have the "quality" of the last generation of NiCad drills.

I don't have one.
But heard some shocking reports back from my install team of the breaking after light to medium use. The install manager is sending them back, getting them fixed and selling them on and going back to De Walt.

I hope when I go back I will get my Bosch replaced with a De Walt, my Bosch is good, but both batteries are dead.

I have an older one about 6 years old now, batteries dont last too long but all still good and working. And its been abused.

I also have the white one and a 4 amp hour battery. Cant fault it, and it gets used hard. But not the quality of the old blue one. Battery lasts all day whacking big screws in.

Still running a lithium drill bought in 08,or 09..... chuck is shot but otherwise fine

Use a Makita drills and impact guns at work never had a problem, they have been dropped from ladders, been stood on,been used to expand the slots in bearing housings for the hold down bolts.

Mind you I have seen people using drills to put in big screws and holesaws in 3rd gear.... then wonder why the gearboxes go.... not just makita either

I've just had mine repaired (BHP458z) after 3 years and 1 month, it had a 3 year warranty. Doh! Phoned Makita Uk and they said drop it to a local repair agent (or send it back to them) and it was repaired under warranty. Good service.
Fault was the switch apparently but I suspect it may have been the transistor.
I took it completely apart (all metal gearbox) , cleaned and greased it (I applied some heat sink heatsink compound to the transistor and copper plate used as a heatsink) , much to the amusement of my friends. Why are you doing that when it's just been repaired?

Also bought a secondhand Makita impact screwdriver, BTD146, which uses the same batteries and a 1.5AH battery. Did the same servicing to the impact driver.

I also picked up an older 18v impact screwdriver, 6936FD, from cash converters for £10 to use on cars. I will buy a battery for that.

my original drill/driver gearbox is going.... works fine on speed 1, slips sometimes on 2, slips constant in 3.
came with 3 batts and charger.
bought another drill/driver body only.

so i had 2 drills and 3 batts..

was ok for a long while till two of the three batts died.
then 3rd one started to go.

got a deal on two new drill/drivers with 2 batts and 1 charger in cases.

a little while ago i found a website that offers to recell your batts...

so i just got two of them done, been upgraded to 3.3ah cells. instead of the standard 2.6ah ones

been looking for an impact driver and grinder.

but they are like rocking horse.....

hard to find stuff like that, that takes the older nimh batts
and when you do. everyone else wants it.....

I have the same drill and my chuck has just went too after not a lot of use - less than 4months old. Going back for repair today.

In comparison, one of the other Makita li-ion drills I have is 8 years old and still going strong. Not sure if the quality is slipping....

I still have my first Makita 9.6v battery drill, it still works fine and in the first five years it did a lot of work, its not got any features other than it still goes round and makes a whirring noise just as it should, I bought it in '85 for 130 pounds.

Over many years I've had loads of Makita drills and they all work more or less as expected and last well enough.

A couple of years ago I was asked the inevitable 'what do you want for Christmas' question and I made the daft move of saying if you are feeling flush a new Makita.

She bought a pair of drills from B&Q and they were 99 quid in a plastic box - they felt plastic and cheap, they lasted about twelve months .

To put this in perspective 130 pounds in 1985 would be approximately 370 pounds today - for a simple two speed drill. It would probably be unfair to compare the quality and expected longevity of these two products - one aimed at the professional user and the other aimed at John Doe who puts up a shelf at home once. I dont beleive 'cos it says Makita its automatically intended to be pro quality.
