Making Weld Letters

Just looking for some advice or to see if anyone has done this before, I'm wanting to make some letters out of weld only with no backing metal. I was thinking of trying to weld a letter onto 10mm thick copper bar then hopefully It wouldnt stick and would fall off easy leaving only the weld or would I be better using thick steel plate and use a really low setting so that I get as little penetration as possible to then take the weld off. Anyone got any ideas ?

Clean copper nice and thick would be your best bet

i have done it using aluminium as a backing material. Worked ok but didn't look as nice as id expected it to

I can't see how it will work, you can't lay it on like a run it will just make a mess of the backing metal like trying to weld over braze it just blows it away. You could try welding onto thin steel then cutting it out as close as possible to the weld.

Welding on top of copper, brass or aluminium. Will just be messy business.

As Pedro says use thin steel and if you have a plasma you could possibly very close to letters.

when i tried it on aluminium it did look quite blobby and the letters were fragile in parts, but it dis work to an extent. Took a few attempts though and i was that unimpressed i decided to just write the letters with a stainless rod on mild plate
