Making a die for pressing small steel 'cups'

The demands of the Shogun repairs keep coming.

The body to chassis mounts each have a small cup on them to locate a mounting rubber.

Most of mine are a bit rotten

They need to be a reasonably accurate size, which is about 65mm wide, 15mm and a base with a 30mm hole in it. I think they're 2 mm.

I could just get a bit of tube and cut/weld something up, but that doesn't sound too much fun. I've just been given a lathe on long term loan, so I thought it might be interesting to try and make a die and punch setup and press them on my 10 ton press.

So does it sound at all plausible?

to be honest i would just machine the cups to original sizes, or slightly thicker wall than original. Why make life hard making tooling to make a part when you can just make the part first

You're probably right to be fair. It'll be a lot easier in the long run. I'm just a fan of making things more complicated than they need to be.

I'll find some steel billet and get on with it.

Yup , i'd get a bit of mild steel and turn them up. The steel to make dies is very expensive and more difficult to work than mild, in addition you'd need a pretty big press to coin them.

Most of that stuff is obsolete unfortunately. I wanted to buy in a front hanger for the rear springs, but sadly no longer available. I had to make one in the end.

I'll make the brackets as they're simple enough.

Thanks for looking for me though, much appreciated. I might see if the two rear brackets are available for sensible money as they're a bit more complicated to get right.

I'll call the Mitsi dealer on Monday. It's just easier as they'll only be available as genuine anyway. The parts guy there already looks weary as soon as I walk in!

Are you just sorting out the mounting points or have you plans to modify it.

Hi Paul,

I'm just repairing it at the moment. I don't really have any plans to modify it just yet. This one is a 1990 Mk1.

Very nice, a lot of work to be done but your doing a good job of it.

My mk2 I bought with a few issues, sorted them out loved driving it on/off road then started over heating till finally head gasket went along with a core plug so stripped it all down only to find a previous owner must of had core plug pop out previously but I stead of replacing it correctly they just bodged it so of course for me to sort that problem wasnt financially worthwhile.

A simple way to make the cups would be to use a short section of tubing the correct size with a thick washer with the right size hole (or there abouts) welded to it with a good fillet weld inside the bore to form the taper.
