I want to make up a little bench top, welding bench / plate sort of thing,
Thinking a lump of mild steel plate / thick sheet, about 500 x 400 or so maybe?
With some angle iron legs welded on the corners for feet (i'd love to use stainless, but don't think i can afford that)
My shed has kitchen worktops against all walls, and the idea is to store the weld plate in one of the cupboards under the benches when not in use, and when in use to 'hopefully' not burn / mark the worktops (i'll be getting some fire blankets that i could place under the plate if needed, tig welding is fairly splatter free i believe, but i'll still be covering the little benchtop lathe with a fire blanket)
I'm wondering what kind of thickness should i go for? i've never worked with anything much thicker than 3mm before, and that was angle / box section, so i'm not sure what thickness i need for a weld plate, i know the thicker the better, but cost is an issue, plus lifting it onto the bench, i just don't have room for a permanent welding area.
This is just for occasional hobby welding, but at first i'll be doing lots and lots of practicing.
I will need to order the metal online, a quick ebay search shows i can get a piece of 500 x 450mm 8mm thick (S275) mild steel plate for 30 quid delivered, this is plasma cut, i'd be happy with flame cut and tidy it up with the angle grinder if i can get it cheaper.
It that too thin? is that expensive, cheap, i really have no clue.
I last bought some steel 20 years ago!!, and it was just lengths of ~3mm thick box section and angle, where i used to live there was a steel stockholders that would sell me offcuts for a few quid a length cash,
But where i live now i don't have a clue where to get steel from locally. so probably easier to get it online for now.... will be the same for any metal i use welding.
