Making a bbq

The ability not only to have a "keep things warm" tray, but also dual grill height for those things which may need to cook slower.

Ive just saw a video of one with a scissor mechanism to give any cooking height required, if i'm not careful im going to end up with a bbq to suit every eventuality but no space left for people.

After the first 15 or so beers the quality of both the food and cooking skills does seem to diminish

I made a cool looking one, drawn up with flames along the back and sides. Plasma cut it all out, put it together....
Looked really good, but wasn't very football friendly, and you wouldnt of wanted to fall over onto it, even if it wasnt lit.

Curled the tops of the flames over with a pair of long nose pliers to make it a bit safer

I made this one a few months ago, it has been put to use. Stainless Beer keg floated up on a high tide, the table came from a friends scrap yard for £30. Top tip even when empty these barrels have a lot of pressure in & it is quite exciting when the grinder disc pierces them!
Other safety tip, Due to the bottom & top rims being machine welded on there is considerable stress locked into the barrel. When you cut it horizontally they will pinch inwards onto the disc & could jam it.
Grill was made from 12mm mild steel bar, a bit meaty but thats what happened to be standing up in a corner of the yard!
It works really well with a lovely even heat & its going to see a lot of use.

Well Ive drawn out my master plan, basically got 3 separate areas that can have the grills at different heights depending on whats cooking or as often happens at the bigger events one side can be reloaded with charcoal while the other is still cooking.

Pretty much all the pieces can be cut from scraps from other projects, I'ts going to mean slightly more welding but uses up my collection of just in case pieces.

I've ordered a couple of grills from ebay so should get a start soon depending on paying jobs, I can add build pictures here if anyones interested.

Interesting, how much are the grills? Are they steel or stainless?

6mm stainless round bar, the big one I've got coming is 700x490mm, and was £39.99, I've used a couple from them before for projects and they seem decent.

You've just reminded me I really should finish those smokers I was meant to be building. They're only projected to come in at 800kg

Mind you the 3m of 20mm 20" OD pipe was free. As was the 3m of 15mm 20" OD pipe.



Wonder what'll be finished first the 6x6 so I can move them or the BBQs...

On a serious note I did a firepit/bbq for someone earlier in the year, he didn't want it falling to bits easily so made it from 5mm steel, the biggest bit of the job was drawing it out, cutting and welding it so it wouldn't have been much cheaper in 3mm.

I have that issue. When I make fire pits and things to go in gardens I have to consider its for normal people not the usual 'Destructive Testing Technicians' that I usually cater for!

My first ever bbq, made from a SS beer keg was stupidly over engineered. The steel frame only succumbed to the tin worm last year. it survived 26 years in the garden With only the first ever coat of black paint

it could be saved but I think it’s served me admirably well for all those years. It’s time for it to be retired

plus I have a 47 kg bottle and a head full of ideas

Yes, a very early '1st nose'. Plus an HY van. The BBQ was at the DSWorkshop in Potters Bar, held, as usual, at Christmas.
