never used one before but over last few days ive been using one to cut holes into steel beams for other steel beams to be bolted up to them

this is on the site job

first day was using it but only had some handy oil to keep the bit cool second day had 5 litres of cutting oil delivered what a difference that made too the job

was cutting 17mm holes with the mag drill

after the last few days I like those drills but there cost is expensive just for an odd few jobs id put them too

the best part in all this i get to keep whats left of the cutting oil and the mag drill drill bit so im happy

now its been mentioned about some other stuff thats more like a grease that just paints on put keeps the drill bit cool so im kinda wondering what that stuff really is

all i was told today the stuff they use is creamy and you brush it onto the drill bit or the surface that your cutting but its thick enough to not just be splattered everywhere while your using the cutter but also keeps the cutting tool cool whilst in use

also cuts through the metal quickly

the stuff i was using today was sort of rapid cutting lubricant used for threading i think

i will get a photo of that stuff tomorrow sort of an oil but a little thicker but still went everywhere

other than that it cut really well through the material with constant minimal pressure on the bit from the mag drill

anyway guy came back to weld the steel beams today so asked him again he said the stuff was like swarfega and you brush it onto your cutter

anyway the stuff im using is this stuff



this was the mag drill i was using as it was on hire



couldnt get the pump working on it so it was squirt a little drill some squirt a little more and so until through the steel beam and plenty of holes to drill at that

though the bit and drill cut really well through the steel

Best stuff I've used so far is metabo cutting paste. Comes in a tub and is a bit pricey but it works pretty well (including upside down). I just rub it on the steel where I'm about to drill.

For a mag drill you cant beat a good mix of soluble oil in a washing up liquid bottle to give it a squirt every now and then.

Or better yet, an oiler on the machine feeding oil through the cutter itself - my favourite method

Only trouble is I find it can take a while to get running plus the bottle has to be swivelled to keep it level when you're drilling something vertical.

I think I prefer Temaxol over RTD and I use both.

I scored a can of that REMS thread cutting oil. It don't arf smoke!

I remember back at college if we ran out of tallow we'd have to go to the corner shop and buy lard!
