Do you have a voltmeter? I'd start with setting the meter to DC volts, max 50V (or higher) then measure from the heavy clamp on the wire feed across to the earth clamp while you pull the trigger.
Doesn't matter if you have a digital voltmeter; it will show + or - and then (hopefully) 20-30 volts DC.
Slightly more important if you have an analogue meter (one with a spring coil indicator) in which case you should have positive lead to the positive clamp but, TBH, if you get it wrong you'll see the indicator try to bounce off in the wrong direction so just disconnect and reconnect the meter the other way round - it won't come to any harm.
