That's 20 thou in old money, sounds like a good start, but if you can find out what is correct as it affects the timing, too wide advances it, too narrow retards it. On a mower I don't know how much difference it would make, not much I'd guess.

Thanks mate, at the moment at widest they are roughly 4mm apart, info i got of someone else on here says 0.05mm... Does that seem about right to u?

Wristpin has years of experience with small engines so I would go with the info he posted for you.

did you clean the points as well use something like 320 wet and dry paper or wife's nail board etc

0.5mm is 20thou so 0.05mm is a tenth of that (2 Thou)which is to tight, I work at 0.1 mm being 4 thou.

That says 0.4mm + or - 0.05mm so the acceptable range is 0.35mm to 0.45mm.
Or .014" to .018" if you have an imperial set of feeler gauges.

Ahhh lol im learning all sorts with my old mower. Glad i found this forum, completely by accident and just by chance i happen to be a welder lol!
Could any of u explain to me in simple as possible terms what 25 degrees before TDC means... Iknow what TDC means buthos doil ow wat 25 degrees before it is... Or roughly where that would putthe piston? Many thanks, sorry im a bit green

Yeah ur right that is to do with the valve timing, i just wanted to make sure that they are opening at the right times. Because when i have been previously trying to start it the plug was always dry... Carb clean and jets clear etc...

I tried meetens mate they quoted me £165 for a whole carb! Tried around elsewhere and got one for £30!! And thats for the whole carb too
