Machining Steering Wheel Spacer

I want to fit a spacer between the original steering wheel and boss in my Renault 5TX as Renault didn't allow enough room underneath for things like legs.

I've had a look around and it looks like a case of removing the 6 bolts, bolting an aluminium spacer to the boss through counterbored holes, then bolting the wheel to the spacer.

The problem is my boss isn't a standard size - the PCD of my bolts is 77mm, the OD of the boss is 88.5mm. I guess the spacer will need to be about 30mm thick but will need to check on the car.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get one made up?

Thanks, I might get stuck - I'm guessing if I want that sort of thing in a funny size it will need making up from scratch. How long do you think it would take to make one? I should imagine a load of setting up time for that sort of thing.

I thought about drilling out one of the smaller ones to give the option of bolting all the way through with longer bolts, though it doesn't seem elegant. Some spacers do seem to work like that so it might be an option.

I had someone from a vw forum make up one for me a few years back, it was just a big polo mint of metal.I drilled the holes with a cheap pillar drill and used long bolts.

Hi Malc, Again if you get stuck I could probably help you out but a bit busy right now, If you can draw what you want as a 2d drawing and save a dxf then its pretty simple for me to do all the hole positions etc. I can put it through my cad cam and put it on my machining center. The offer is there if you need it.

Thanks, I've found one with the correct external diameter but the wrong PCD. Looks like there should be enough room to drill holes in the right place if I mark out carefully which should save making one up from scratch.

Can't you butcher an old steering wheel from a scrapper

Sorted now. I bought a spacer designed for 74mm PCD, bored the holes out by 1.5mm and just bolted all the way through. Thanks for the offers of help and the advice.
