Machining a bearing

It’s a motorbike gearbox bearing, some have pins in to stop the bearing rotating.

grind a groove in the bearing shell with an angle grinder and shorten the pin

I’ve got a dremel and a die grinder, don’t think I’ve got a small enough burr but it’s worth a go. Thinking about it, somewhere I’ve got a dremel drill press, that’d keep it all nice and straight, hmmmm worth trying on some scrap bearings first.

Dremel drill press would work. Never heard of such a thing! I thought you could make something out of thread bar so that one turn is a known depth because of pitch. If that makes sense.

You can get 3.2mm shank burrs online cheap enough.

grind a groove in the case too and use a pin as a woodruff key , depending on the case and what holds it all in place ,,,, or locktite bearing bond

cant beat having a load of carborundum grit in the chuck and all over the saddle etc

Only time I had to grind on my lathe I taped polythene up to protect. Still have it a clean down but protected the worst.

Never used the L mate. Cut the belt off to strip it for the van and never fitted it again.

Though it's a doddle to pull the TS apron etc off the L for a decent clean down if I did.

Stellite drill, no coolant,fairly heavy pressure and about 3000 rpm. Push until it glows, it then starts cutting. Works a charm .Do not use coolant,it works by heating up the metal and annealing it as it goes.Obviously align it such that you are not going to drill into one of the balls!

I think @brightspark is more of a traditional Tipex thinners kinda guy

I might grind a flat/groove on the outer race and drill a suitable hole in the bearing housing to thread and use a grub screw to prevent the bearing rotating. Issues arising might be deflection of the shaft from true, access, etc.

Without complete details, the most effective solution may, of course, be something other than the above…

Yamaha TDR250 so same as TZR250 1988-90 ish.
