Hi,

I need to get an old Edwards English wheel moved from Reading to Bristol. I’m having trouble finding the right vehicle to hire.

Unfortunately, collection can only happen on a Saturday or Sunday for the next few weeks. There’s fork lift at the collection end to lift the wheeling machine onto a flatbed or trailer, but not one at delivery.

I’m now having to consider hiring someone who has a hiab, and is prepared to collect and deliver on a weekend day.

Has anyone here used anyone good, or got any recommendations?

If you have a vehicle with a towbar and a reasonable towing rating, a trailer is usually best and normally quite cheap and easy to hire.
If they can fork it on (over the side usually) and you can secure it properly, then your only real challenge is offloading it.

I've found a couple of strong brick pillars with an RSJ across the top and a chain hoist works well, or if you have time to weld up an A frame.
Something you can back the trailer under, winch up the item, remove trailer and then lower to the ground.
You can also try using an engine crane, but 9/10 times the legs are in the wrong place.

Once on the ground it is just a case of moving it Egyptian style into the building.

I built a temporary gantry using scaffolding plus a chain hoist to lift a machine of a trailer. Just like you, I inched it up into the air and slid the trailer away. I then bolted timbers to the base so I could lower it down onto a pallet truck.

I have a towbar on my campervan. Unfortunately, it’s a 2L Talbot Express and barely has enough power to pull itself. Think the clutch would go before we got to the M4.

I think Luton taillifts are only good to 500kg, and didn’t fancy trying to push the wheel onto the platform. The footprint is quite large and not sure there’d be much room. Also makes it harder for them to forklift the wheel into the back.

There are companies on the estate with a forklift, but they’re all shut on Saturdays.

I have mentioned it to the guy I work with and he reminded me that we have a 2 post car-lift with four adjustable extendable arms! Have no idea why I didn’t think of it. Maybe because there’s cars on and under it. Think it would be possible to reverse a drop side in and use the car lift arms to raise it up and lower it down.

Think that’s the best solution for now.

I am possibly trundling down the M4 to Wales with an empty trailer in the next week or two and this will be on a weekend, this is subject to an offer being accepted. Wouldn't be any hardship to collect at Reading but unloading your end would need sorting out.

He's worth a call. He moved a Mill from Sheffield to near Edinburgh for me a few years ago at a reasonable price.

Direct runs with HIABs aren't cheap. Even a short distance you are looking at £400. Any further you are looking at £800 or more.
English wheels are awkward things. We could possibly ship it lying down on a pallet - depends on the size of it. Even 2 pallet spaces cheaper than any other method. Our lorries have tail lifts as standard - if it will fit.

That, how I loaded & unloaded my lathe , but I used 6x6 inch ( cheap deal from the wood yard ) baulks of pine seven feet long dropped a rebar centre bolt into the up rights to stop things falling off and used four ratchet straps as guy ropes anchored to 12 mm chemical anchored eye bolts to peg it back & front . Removed the eye bolts afterwards

Thanks Bob. That’s a very kind offer. Much appreciated.

I managed to sort it out quite easily in the end. Hired a dropside flatbed. Getting it on with the forklift was a breeze. Block of wood supported the weight of the arch. Loads of straps at all angles.

At my end, we dropped the sides, reversed it in and lifted off with the four arms of the car lift.
