For heavy machines on slightly uneven concrete floors, what is the best stuff to sit them on?
I saw Mr Crispin (youtube) using some sort of compressed cork stuff (tico?) but I can’t find the video again.

my little lathe about 1/2 ton sits on rubber sheet about 6mm thick. it works. how long it will last, i don't know. is it the best, no idea time will tell. lasted about 3 years so far

I have ice hockey pucks in holders I welded up for my workbench, lathe and mill are on 16mm adjustable feet I got off a scrap machine at ex-works. For the heavier machines when being installed the installers used steel plate / sheet and grout.

I have quite often seen 100mm squares of 1/4 ply sanwiched between different amounts of steel sheet as shims. sometimes the ply is the bottom piece of the stack if the floor is rough.

Depends on the machine and how it's built, but Tico matting is the stuff for larger surface area feet/frames.


The Cork type is pretty old school basic stuff for lighter machines. There are a few types they do depending on load/level of absorption required.
Often see levelling screws on big gear sat on steel shims, good idea to tack them together/pin into place if its subject to a lot of movement.

My lathe, similar to the Warco wm290, has cork mats between the lathe bed and stand which then sits on a 1/2” ply base on the concrete floor….my mill, a 626, does the same….

The mounting method depends on the type of lathe frame. "Cube" or "bridge". + what accuracy is needed and is there any twisting of the rails, from frame deformation

I have heard old conveyor belt matting is ideal for this kind of thing.
Also used on big power hammers to cushion the blow through the floor.
