machine grease

ive got a few things to get and need to do some clean ups on the machines i have as some dust got into myford when i had to do the roof even though it was covered over

ive got an old milling machine with chain the knee wants a clean and before refitting

a mt2 head that needs stripping cleaning and reputting back together before fixing to the bar of milling machine

and an ml7 lathe

what grease should i be using for these machines to keep the parts well oiled and greased up

im used to bearing grease or copper grease

Most machines use oil, not grease. For which you”ll need an oil pump gun rather than a grease gun. An exception might be the motor bearings which need a pump of grease every 6-12 months. You can get proper slideway oil, but to be honest anything is better than nothing - maybe an sae30 if that’s all you can get locally.

Don't use copper grease or any grease on the slideways. It's usual to grease bearings, open gears and rack and pinion.

Bearings, bearing grease. Slides and chains molly grease. You can get chain greases.

Copper greases on nuts and bolts.

On the lathe and other slide ways a nice wax will do.

On the MT2 head some seals will love you long time if you use red drubber grease.

I use Synthetic motor oil around my machines....Myf/S7 etc etc....Bridgeport....
All those grease point nipple looking things went in the bin years ago....
All converted to drippers...some just got threaded for a large grease nipple, chucked the guts away and made a brass screw to close the hole.....this way u can see the oil disappear with use....the ones on the saddle got covered with those super magnetic disc's, slide em out the way and fill the hole.....on my lathe there,s no room for drippers...
Loads'a talk about the special oiler guns for Myford, never found one that didn't make a mess or leaked....
Which is one of the reasons I binned all the original oilers, beside I worry that the oil is getting where it's supposed to not all over the machine...
Back gears get a few drops of chain saw chain oil, cos it's like child snot....sticks to everything.....hahaha....
Slideways also gets Synth....
Once cleaned the chains get what Evers best rated for motor cycles....
On machine chains, I soak em in diesel fuel, working them around(rotating them whilst submerged....
Then drip dry overnight then in a tub of ep90 gear oil a soak for a few days....drip dry for a week n that’s it...
Then the odd spray with chain oil....
Have very long chains on my car LIFT’S.....not worth cleaning and messing with....
Every couple of years I replace em, cheap as chips in 20-25 feet boxes of chain......
