Machinability of C34

I have been asked to reduce the thickness of a gear, chap tells me its C34. Does any know if C34 ( google not very helpful) is machinable. Or is it known by another name?

Would C34 refer to the hardness (Rockwell) rather than the actual type of steel?

I may be getting rusty but I think C34 is the core hardness of the steel and not a grade.

If c34 refers to the Rockwell hardness then you can turn/grind/file it easily as it's the same as an ordinary bolt.

Thanks chaps, that makes me feel better, I was beginning to worry that I was losing it as I have never heard of C34 He is bringing the part over next week, I should know more then. Apparently he needs 2mm off each side.

Looks like there are already scratches in the face so it should not be hard. Ask him to file one corner of a tooth. If the file skates turn the job down. If it doesn't you can turn the job down.

Job turned up and there was no problem. It was a 33 tooth wild star pulley that needed reducing in width to fit a Yamaha XV1700 warrior which machined very nicely. Thanks for all you input.
