Sorry I can't be more help. As you've had some success with SMC reset, etc., it sounds like the PSU is working (not that there is much that goes wrong with them apart from the cable fraying). If you get boot sounds (bong), it could be screen related issues, but I'm still thinking battery, due to the age of the machine. You could try and find a local mac specialist, if you're in Essex there will be a few.

Sounds like a dead battery.
2012 Mac will have a decent chunk of value to it, don’t let anyone take it off your hands too cheaply (unless it’s me of course).
Apple store should be able to swap out a battery for you and there’s so much good info out there (if you know what you’re looking for) there are also plenty of decent corner shop repair stations. They will be the ones who might try to “do you a favour” and take it off your hands. New battery and hang onto it would be my advice.

That is what I am suggesting but 2012 is a watershed moment regarding operating system compatibility.
A 2011model is a lot less valuable. Not all Apple’s fault. The internet changes, softwares change, new developments in video codecs, browser plugins etc. etc. Operating systems for desktop, laptop, tablets and phones need to keep up with this progress so it is more amazing that an eight year old computer is still useable, let alone still still capable and desirable.
Who in their right mind would design a computer now to last ten years? What will the prevailing technology be in a decade? Free cloud based quantum computer would be my guess. Naturally as a mere citizen, the word “free” may be modified to the opposite of its current meaning.
They may be “expensive” items even for a premiere brand but the actual cost is offset by obsolescence and there is no money in “repairs” (trust me on this). The Apple Store concept was a brilliant idea but you can’t maintain a computing device forever, there has to be a cut off.

I used to work for Apple. I would move heaven and earth to help someone fix their Mac. Of course there comes a cut off point when an older device is beyond economic repair.
It is a simple philosophy that works really well for less technical users: deploy an all Apple workflow/lifestyle and everything will just click together. Don't like the "sandbox" mentality? - go buy a PC or Android.

Yes, lots of shouty tech guys on the internet (what a surprise) though I happen to be a fan of Louis Rossmann. Bottom line is - there is no money in repairs. Period.
The entire concept of an Apple Store effectively defines and underlines that simple fact. They will honor their warranty, service or repair qualified items for free(!), deliver high quality free training and of course, use the opportunity for some upselling.
If the user has physically broken an item (like a heavily bonded screen) or it's been opened up by an unauthorised repair shop, all bets are off. There's a lot of fiddly stuff going on inside those boxes and as often as not, they will "swap repair" an item rather than even try to fix it. But if someone other than a qualified technician has already had a poke around inside, forgetaboutit. Who knows what other damage may have been done and fixing stuff is already hilariously expensive.
The business model includes qualified repairs but does not rely on it. So far it has proved a fairly successful model...

It is not that far off topic. I used to work as a technical consultant (for Apple!) during my most productive/valuable days. When you are a "hired gun", the last thing you want to do is to simply blurt out "the answer". You have to drip feed the client else you just spent ten years learning something and give it away in seconds.

In a "free" public forum, this epiphany should be stood on its head. If you're not prepared to "tell the truth" then you might want to reconsider appearing in a forum for debate. Hence the sig. You couldn’t even begin to repair these sort of things unless you’ve got the schematics,
a microscope, a fancy multimeter and the spare parts.
