Daughters old mac laptop is slow so she is buying a new one
They have offered her £160 trade in, its slow but all hardware tested fine in Apple shop its 6 years old so she has decided to replace it, would we get more selling it privately or is it not worth the hassle?
The offered £80 for her I phone 6 but when it came to do the deal dropped it to £40 as she was getting the Mac on a student deal so can't have both?

I sold my iPhone 6 for £140 on eBay wasn’t an issue but Iv sold a screen for a Landy and they guys clicked buy it now and wants to collect it.... in August when he’s back from holiday!

Cex sell the iphone 6 for £165 and buy for £69.00, so relative to that Apples offer wasn't bad. But, You'll get more on ebay for it as long as you're not messed about with scammers and idiots that these types of items seem to attract.

Depends on the spec of the laptop but £160 sounds a bit thin for such a new machine. Must be a 2012/13 machine so can probably run the latest OS. Later/newer versions of Mac OS X have lots of bells and whistles built in to run modern video codecs, upgraded USB etc. There is a break point at 2010 where the older machines can't run the latest OS so can't update their software. My old Mac Pro falls into that category and the difference between a 2009 and a 2010 machine is phenomenal.
Up to 2009 ~ £100 to £200, post 2010 ~£600 to £3k.

Let me know the full spec and I'm estimate the value.

Clearly the iPhone 6 is worth a ton more for cash....

If it's one of the models that can be upgraded, and it's in otherwise good condition, then I would suggest she swap the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD), get a new battery for it, and max out the RAM, instead of getting a new one. The SSD in particular will give a huge boost to the performance of the laptop, and she may find that it ends up being quick enough to keep for another couple of years. I'm still using a 2009 Macbook which has been upgraded as above.

To work out whether it can be upgraded, first find out what model it is - go to the apple menu and select About This Mac... and then it's the first line in the window that opens. Then have a look on a website like Crucial UK which will allow you to search to see what can be upgraded. Unfortunately a lot of the newer laptops cannot be upgraded by the user, from late 2012 onwards, in which case she'll probably need to upgrade.

If an item is less than £50 then ebay is a waste of time....I just give away to a friend who does charity car boot sales.

I'd list for £200 with offers set to reject below £175 automatically and see what happens....am assuming you know how to wipe the drive? Personally I never sell anything with a hard drive still inside....just not worth the risk (same goes for mobile phones)

The only hard disk wiper tool I trust is a hammer!!!

Its a massive amount of money to her as she is at Uni working one afternoon per week and her summer placement, whilst its served her extremely well its time to change but I need to be certain she gets the best trade in deal. She bought the replacement last night as she now has two weeks to return and can trade in her old one, good idea really

Like I said, depends on the precise model and specification. Two virtually identical machines can be miles apart in potential value if one just happens to be a desirable version.
