People who are prepared to put themselves out and do the hours will do alright. If you suggested to many people today that they could work all week then go and work 18hrs days at a weekend as well they would think you'd lost the plot. Many will argue that maybe you shouldn't have to that but those same people are ones moaning they can't afford things. I bet you had a great laugh and it was means to an end. Hope your station was the end of the line or it would have been easy to fall asleep and miss the stop.
I spent a year doing a 300 mile a day commute to my patch, and before that I spent 6 months doing every single bit of extra overtime and standby because we had two mortgages. If I could rewind I would do it all again. You can only do these things when you are young.
Hard work "kills old horses" - but young lazy horses starve to death....
