low profile fime/dust mask

looking for a bit of lung protection while welding now as im no longer welding outdoors, and its only took an hour with the mig to have me sneezing black stuff out again.

my mask is identical to the r-tech speedmaster PRO HD, so looking for something that will fit under that, be comfy and not fog the screen up, preferably with replacable filters.

will only ever be used for welding/grinding, maybe the occasional bit of painting but that would almost certainly be done outdoors

Can't justify the cost for the amount I do. The shed is well ventilated, doors always open, but the fumes from mig are a bit much in such a small area...don't notice it with the tig, and the stick welding/gasless still gets done outdoors so a normal face mask with filters would do

I've always been tempted to run an airline into my mask with a small valve to restrict flow

figure it would be enough to keep fumes/dust away and keep me cool (obviously no good for toxic stuff)

I've never gotten around to try it, a very skinny airline should do, small enough to not get in the way, maybe a quick release airline fitting at waste hight

That involves running a noisy compressor all the time though, and I feel like the risk of getting stuff in your eyes may be increased

Thats what I squeeze under mine (not often enough ) with glasses and beard.

I've also taken to having a small cheap USB fan nearby to blow or suck the fumes away a little.

I did look at both of these as well as the jst with low profile filters as well. Still not sure which to go for but will likely go out Monday and grab something

Suggest fit a local extraction - large fan, moveable hose, to suck all the nasties and grinding dust out before it gets to your nose.
I knly do grinding outside as I dont want the mess.

Could be worse for you than the dust. You need breathing quality filters if using compressed air to a mask.

Shave it off!
Trend/Stealth do some compact masks which appear to work ok. The design prevents testing the fit and I believe they might not be correctly rated, but they are low profile and work well for low risk situations. Also very cheap on amazon.

If you're welding mostly in one place, over a workbench? Is it worth rigging up some extraction? Nederman etc are prohibitively expensive for hobby use but a useful effort can be rigged up using cheaper extractor/s and flexible ducting aimed at the domestic market. A cheap inline fan probably won't be all that long lived but doesn't sound like it's going to be used a huge amount.

Got one of these and the Trend one but always go back to my 7503.

I'm not totally sure why, but I don't think that sort of fan is the most appropriate. Most use squirrel cage type but guess you'd gat away with a ducted axial one. Probably pressure characteristics through ducting. The ~12" diameter of a car fan seems a bit overkill for the diameter of a sensible sized duct though!

Me too. I've got a high bridge on my nose and the 7502 is the only mask that's comfortable.
