Low Hydrogen Mig wire?

Just had a customer enquire about low hydrogen mig wire? Never heard of it although he has said he has used it before. Basically he is buying a tracked digger and is wanting to weld extra bars/grouzers onto the tracks. I do weld bars onto forestry tracks for extra traction but normally just use normal mig wire and had no problems. The bars are usually just hardox maybe 30-40mm thick and the same high for the forest machines the digger ones will be a good deal longer.

Anyone knows about this or can recommend a wire?

This is a photo of the bars to what I weld to just using ordinary mig wire. I normally weld extra blocks to the ends of these tracks. Cannot see digger tracks being any different just the extra bars are going to require more weld.

Basically ALL mild steel MIG wire is Low Hydrogen. Flux Cored can contain Hydrogen.

Thought as much I'm no expert but I've never heard of it. Did tell him but he was adamant he had used it. I think he has been getting mixed up with rods.

He's probably thinking of flux cored.

There are occasions where Hydrogen can be introduced into the metal but they are rare and specialised, such as Super Duplex Stainless. On mild steel the only source of hydrogen is the lubricant on the surface. I once tested some that was heavily coated in a grease like substance and I think we got 8mls / 100g which is still classed as Low Hydrogen.

But its amazing how these things get noticed and copied from one specification to another by people who dont know what theyre doing. Ive seen low hydrogen requirement on Inconel which cannot suffer from hydrogen cracking. It was obviously copied from a Super Duplex spec.

Theres a famous set of specifications that all include Mercury limits. Its impossible for the materials to include Mercury as it would simply boil off.

It's possible that some unscrupulous salesman has sold him a roll of standard mig wire, told him it was special low hi stuff and charged him an equally 'special' price.

That's what i thought mig/tig is all equivalent to LoHi the hydrogen is only introduced from the flux on a standard electrode. I once saw a set of drawings for a tig job specified LoHi filler rod to be used throughout.
