Recorded very close to where I live; the daily spectacle of extremely low flying fast-jets is one of the many joys of life here in Snowdonia.....today it was the turn of a party of Eurofighter Typhoons to scintillate with the crackle of their afterburners.

my last hobby was hangliding .the tornadoes from raf leeming just used to fly under us round ingleby bowl. they have 2 seconds not to crash into u 1st second to see u .2nd second to pull up and avoid . after a while u get used to it

We live 6 miles from RAF Valley just to one side of the landing aproach line, so we see lots of different plane types coming in to land low & slow, jet fighters, huge transports, the Red Arrows, The historic flight (spitfire, hurricane, wellington) + some very strange looking stuff.

Fortunatly they take off the other way

Out last house was an aiming mark for the fighters, we are now about 1/2 mile away from that house so still in the area. We get to see lots of dog fights of the valley planes. A long time ago I used to live near to Farnborough & some of the stuff that used to fly over was very odd.

The only thing I see round here is the odd Nimrod coming in for refurbishment to #4...

God I miss the "olduns" taking off before refurb
Trees used to blow like a hurricane was coming through

Well, Irony is a kind of metalwork!


I`m an aviation enthusiast; but three Typhoon`s on full-afterburners repeatedly roaring over the house at <200ft. at 23.00 hrs. (as it was last night) can get a little wearing.

Out last house was an aiming mark for the fighters, we are now about 1/2 mile away from that house so still in the area. We get to see lots of dog fights of the valley planes. A long time ago I used to live near to Farnborough & some of the stuff that used to fly over was very odd.

We too lived very close to an RAF Nav point at Guyhirn Wisbech and as they screamed across the fens at 200 ish feet in black out gear to and from the bombing sight at Wainfleet etc . They slid directly over my farm buildings at about 147 feet for I lived on the highest part of the fens in an old gate keepers crossing house on Gull Drove built into the 50 foot embankment .

We saw several ringed doves get consumed .... the craft passing by so close at about 200 feet away you could see the wires , black visors and tubes on the head sets ...amazing stuff on a very frequent basis .

One morning I awoke just as at about 04.20 dawn was waking the earth from darkness and giving it the cool grey first light.
On looking out the bathroom windows clear glass ( no neighbours any where near or able to see up that high I was greeted with am amazing weird sight , for a long sequence of lights dripping down from on high in a long slow arc down to about 150 feet coming down the track bed towards my home.

Goose pimples , hairs on end & my heart beating like it was trying to escape, they got closer and closer like ghosts ..no sound just a steady advance .
At about 1/2 mile I stopped having the cold sweat and the butterflies in my bum subsided ....they were a long string of Star lifters flying low and slow ..they weren't much louder than a couple of big HGV's even when they passed over head ... all six of them


When the Gulf war 1 kicked off and things increased with A10 warthogs blasting armour representative targets etc out on the Wainfleet ranges air traffic was busy to say the least.

I had considered putting on the big 40 x 20 mtr shed roof on each side of the slope just for the fly boy's ,painted 4 foot high letters , a pair of Union Jack's and the words " Brit Army ..no friendly fire .... please ! "

Although I've never known where they are headed I get all sorts over my place. Lots of Hercs , miscellaneous combat stuff , lots of chopper transports , smaller choppers , etc , etc. The Hercs and jets are always low , the jets low and FAST !!!
My favourite is the battle of Britain memorial flight , which always seems to go over after RIAT has finished.
I used to think it was all SAS traffic , as I live just up the road from Hereford , but this stuff is all heading north ??!!
Does anyone have any idea where it is heading ?

Herky birds could be on the way to Lossimouth just an hour or so from Lyneham , Waddington , Scampton or a big beach like here in South Wales at Pendine where they practice landing on the beach having dropped off the bird muck or paras etc. some where enroute etc.

I once saw 7 tonnes of canned compo rations etc. dropped in a trials session one day at Salisbury Plain. ever seen 7 tonnes of canned food hit the ground form 10,000 feet or so and see the parachute gently float down a minute late still unattached . Twas hard to keep a straight face .

Jets often take a quick short cut east to west along Loch Ness .. I have been higher up than some of the Ness banks spotting from a high pine tree and been able to look down into/onto such jets ... freeky .....as you hear the whining/ singing of the air going in the engines first then a few milli seconds late a bit of high speed scrap goes by and a shock wave that tried to de-tree you.

You might also be under a one way military air circuit route so you only see one way / direction north traffic.

That's why I love holidaying in Wales or anywhere in the west of the country.

I was up the Tor some years ago when out of nowhere, three Hawks in close formation streaked past at low level and were gone in seconds. Everyone cheered which kind of surprised me as they had smashed the peace into pieces. It was the best part of the holiday.

Last year I was in Aberystwyth and got a forty minute air show as Hawks again, practiced air to air combat over the sea. Brilliant.

Lovely countryside! we have them training through the glen where I live, when the RAF got their new euro fighter one of my sons was off school we were heading up the drive to get the rest of the kids from the school bus. The jet passed just in front of us on a tilt we could see the pilot clearly Cuilen had both arms up waving madly. He then flew the plane in a massive circle heading back down the glen and came straight back up over head tilting the wings either way as if he was waving at Cuilen he was extatic by this. I think it is a great thing to watch these planes in action dont know how people get upset by it all they dont fly here on weekends or for some reason Fridays that is when we get the trainer planes which also have a lovely sound.

I'm jealous, all we get passing over here are Hercules and the Police helicopter!
