Low carbon and medium carbon steel

I want to make a tool holder for the QCTP of my mini lathe. I hace F212 steel (I think is a spanish or european name) it contais lead. It supossed to be easy to machine. Is it a good steel for that part of my mini lathe?

My mill is also mini, so any help to machine that part is welcome.

Doh! As luck would have it, a low carbon free machining steel...

Depends on the precise design of your holder because the data sheet suggests it has relatively low ductility. Having heard Curtis from Cutting Edge Engineering (YouTube) criticise a popular make of QCTP which he has seen snap (and nearly kill someone!), I would be wary of having a lead alloyed part under extreme load unless it had been properly designed to account for its mechanical properties.

Alright I give in. All I was saying is that it is not enough information to say low carbon bad, medium carbon good.

Apparently it is so long as you add sufficient disclaimers.

There are as many grades of steel as rats in london! We can only generalise. Telling somone, "its too complex", is not very helpful.

@Johnnybravo yes true, but its hard work on smaller machines. You need the right tools for the chrome alloys. My lathe can just about manage en19t but its not easy.

I cant find any details on it. I assume that is similar to En1A-Pb leaded steel - I havent used either. Its reported to be one of the easiest machining steels but it has poor strength, and not for welding. Im sure it could work but I wouldnt choose it. Most chinese holders are listed as plain 0.45% carbon steel.

Which QCTP have you got? You know holders can be fabricated and welded, rather than machined, it may help make them easier/quicker. Can never have too many..

Yeah but it is a speciality material and that application is not really its forté.

All joking aside, I would defer to @Kram who clearly has more experience in such matters.

@Johnnybravo what do you think about a lead alloy steel being used as a tool holder? I think it's the multifix type that some people are wary of but even so, I assume the lower ductility makes it less suitable for critical high load applications.

Yes I know I can do it in 2 parts and weld it later. But I enjoy machining and for me it is a way to learn about it.

One question, everybody usually talk about hardness, but what about rigidity? How affect the content of carbon in the steel?

Youngs modulus, all steels are roughly the same, from mild steel to HSS.

Tungsten carbide has about 3x the stiffness and for that reason is excellent for boring bars - one of the best upgrades you can get in my opinion.

You can't weld that leaded steel...
