En24 machines lovely. Brilliant for thread cutting .Much preferred to the crappy mild steels that contain too many manhole covers and not enough ball bearings….Yes, but its a very complex subject and an interesting one, worth having a read!
What is your problem or choice you are trying to solve?
Unhardened will not significantly improve the wear resistance but will be much nicer to machine than low carbon steel.
Hardness is often a trade off with ductility and weldability. High carbon steels can be brittle, even annealed, so to get around it, better steels have other elements are added. En24 has high chrome and is a pain to machine in any state.
