Lounge lighting

I'll be decorating the lounge soon but I want to sort out the lights first to cover up any rewiring etc...

Currently have two pendants with frosted glass shades, and I find them far too bright without lighting the room too well. Bright indoor lighting makes me tired quickley!

Any suggestions? What do you have?

i have 3 sets of lights

main light on ceiling, 2 side lights and a lamp light the side lights and lamp light is for cozy room look whilst the big one is used when looking for something or when needed

Paper lanterns work well at diffusing a bright source, and softening the light it produces, without wasting too many lumens in the process. Alternatively, something that directs the light downwards, without glare to the sides, along the lines of:

Agree with gaz1 about the table lamp and/or sidelights for warm glow type lighting.

Use warm white (2700K) bulbs if possible, with opal "glass" (most of it is plastic these days)

use led dimmable bulbs and a trailng edge dimmer switch on whater you get for ceiling and you can turn them down

Bin the leccy lights and get a couple of paraffin lamps - much nicer, warmer glow....

I am serious but doubt many will go that way.... on a more serious note, if you are decorating and dont mind a bit of mess to tidy up, install well placed 5 amp round pin plugs around the room and switches to control for table/floor lamps, put something aesthetically pleasing in to replace the ceiling lamps and dont use them unless you need to light the entire room brightly.

I hate ceiling lamps full stop...every house I've owned they have all been removed...
I install wall lights....there are some good looking units now....
often I put in an extra power ring with another switch....
so that when I turn it on the TV and other dedicated lamps come on at the same time.....
I found this system when I lived in the states 50 years ago....love it....
when we sell and move on everybody loves it.....

These b & q shades weren’t expensive. Used warm white led lamps and they give out a nice light

No help whatsoever to the original question. But, we've got 2x ceiling mounted lights in our lounge which take 6 GU9 bulbs each and you'd think that would be well too bright.

But, as they only last for about 30 seconds before blowing most of the time theres only one or two bulbs out of the 12 actually working, so it's normally like the black hole of calcutta.

My only useful advice is don't buy anything that takes a GU9 bulb, unless you want to make a step ladder part of your lounge furnishings.

I think I would go with the upside down coolie type lampshade, spreads the light over the ceiling more and not so glaring

I bought some carbon filament bulbs recently. Much nicer to look at.

Or if they do (some specialist needs), don't by non UK spec ones that are designed for 220v
