im getting used to a ''new to me'' welder, the castomag180 [see welders section ]
i have argonlite in the bottle ,

i was welding some 2mm thick box section today ..
one or two tacks came out realy nice nice, 1 bit blew through,

but i was sruprised by quite a few bright orange blobs of molten stuff ,
jumping about and fizzing on the bench , some of them went 3 feet away...

i did clean the euro torch steel liner out,
with a thick piece of wire and some drips of white spirit when i got it 3 week ago,
and hung it up for a week to drip out,
when i ist tried it last week there was a lot of black soot around the work ..
but not now... any one had similar stuff jumping around

MIG dose produce spatter, you just have to minimise it by getting your settings right. If the materal is dirty or rusty you will get more spatter.

it was very clean , just been polised with sander,
this was a lot of splatter i did have the settings on a high ish setting , will try some more tomorrow...

Torch angle probably - if the torch angle is very shallow, or you blow through it's just a big molton snotter. Nothing to worry about.

If it's anything like our old one then shifting the inductance up a bit usually helps, barely ever used the lowest setting.

i did have an almost 90 deg angle, im also setting up the mask as every thing looks a bit bright, and i see more of the wire that the weld pool..

in reality ive probably, done less than a full hour of actual welding over the years,
a lot more cleaning and tidying etc etc
but this year im set to do some serious hours ...

i had a play today ...

turned the power down i was on 5 of 6...

a lot less splatter, and much smoother welds

changed the inductance setting, and it welded quite nicely ...very good for my limited skillz

looks like im good to start improving my welding ...

I have a castomag 180 too, which i got second hand a number of years ago... it's ancient but still going strong!! Great machine!
