lost skills (die sinker)

I've watched these videos a few times now and its great to see skills like them. They are of a die sinker working in sheffield in the late 70's and also a knife blade forger (well it is sheffield).

Great stuff. I find this sort of video quite relaxing to watch, a bit like how I imagine my life in my workshop to be once I win the lottery. Thanks for posting them.

Tool and die making is like a black art, we used to have a unit next door to a company that did this and the shear skill was difficult to assimilate, they are wizards with metal !!
I'm guessing much of it is now done on 5 axis mills using 3D modelling ?

I'm surprised the bloke doing the metal spinning still has 10 fingers - not keen at all on the way his coat sleeve dragged on the spinning lathe...

Yes tigler , thats why i said lost skills , i know die makers are still out there working , but i doubt many are tapping away with hammer and chisels, its all cnc milling now i suppose.

I would think now it is more likely to be spark erosion rather than cutting though. (?)
