lost my v5, and plates - how to get the reg from the frame number?

Winchman's thread has reminded me -

I have a yamaha rd125lc mk3 registered in my name, but i cant find the V5, and its got not plates on it.

I called the DVLA about 6 months ago and all they could offer was a Q plate - but im sure that, with the frame number, there must be some way of looking up the reg? I mean, i think the police do that kind of stuff all the time, right? So it must all be on a database somewhere.


& should i be worried that i dont get SORN reminders? Its not been on the road since before the whole SORN thing was bought in, so maybe that's why?

Have you not got any old photos of the bike that might have its reg in the picture?

You don't get sorn reminders any longer. It stays sorned until you tax it

no old photos - i did think of that, but it was way back before digital cameras. before i even had a mobile, i think!

I've seen people search here using a frame number to determine if a vehicle is stolen, it's possible it may return the vehicles correct reg. I've not used it so I can't be sure. https://isitnicked.com/

If that doesn't work it might be worth ringing a local Yamaha dealer and see if they have anything on their records?

Thank you - i just tried the checker above with the chassis number of my landover (which i have to hand) and it has confirmed that its not stolen, but given no further details.

If you put in a random word or number to the checker, it comes back "not stolen" so, im sure, it just checks a stolen list for the word you put in (which is fair enough!) and tells you if its on there, rather than checks any further database.

Ill try calling a dealer - thats not a bad idea.

Or Yamaha UK, they should be able to tell you which dealer it was supplied to.

surely if its registered in your name you just apply for replacement,when you find the reg no. that is.

Phone Yamah UK and ask for customer service. I spoke to a very nice lady there about registering my FZR 400 RACE BIKE.
That can sort you out I think.

It would have had a tax disc on it, is that still in the holder ?

I would say best bet is to take some pictures, and send a covering letter explaining the situation to DVLA(recorded delivery), sadly it often depends on who deals with. They should be able to prove that the frame number you have ties up with the bike registered in your name. I would say worst case senario you may have to pay £25 to get a new V5. A friend of mine was trying a register an imported car, previous owner had not been able to do it. Turns out someone had misread the chassis number and it didn't match the paperwork from the other country but it was very clear where the mistake was. He sent a load of photos and a full covering letter with copies of all the evidence. Few weeks later an age appropriate V5 arrived and added quite a bit of value to the vehicle.

no old mot's? or remember anywhere it may have been mot'd? sometimes parts suppliers list chassis numbers linked to your reg, try a friendly parts place.

Go into your local yamaha dealer with the frame number and sometimes they can pull up the reg that was assigned to it.

Or try dvla again as does depend on who you get there,

And sorn now lasts 10 years so wouldn't worry too much.

If it was off the road before SORN, you are okay - I discovered that when I complained about the fine for not getting a reminder one year when it had to be done every year, despite getting seven (!) the year before.

If you really can't find the reg anywhere, the chassis number should get you a build date and form that either a "new" old plate, or an age related plate that you can't transfer.

These days DVLA seem to get suspicious when a vehicle that has been SORNed for that long re-appears, so they check a few now and then. This is all it may be, as said above ring them again you may have no problems at all next time.

Normally an owners club will be able to assist - have you tried them ?
