Lost car keys.

My mate had his nicked but he saw the guy in his kitchen and chased him off. The Police said he was after the keys to come back and steal the car. They also said he would have thrown them when chased..........anyway its cost over 2 grand to replace.........he was quoted £700 for the keys but they said they may not work....they didnt so he had to have a new thingybob..........personally I would have argued that the thingybob was their problem.

The immobiliser/alarm fob for mine is in an actual fob, not part of the key.

From an epic anti-theft perspective, I can bypass both in about 5 minutes if I had cause to...

Alarm on the disco? Mines never worked correctly

Luckily the immobiliser still functions fine.

I had a BMW 5 series and the keys stored information. They kept a memory of your settings so if you used a different key the seats would move and the radio would be on a different station, the door mirrors moved etc etc.......what would they cost to replace

Depends on the age of your 5er. My e60 has the 'lozenge' shaped job which performs all the functions you list and they're about £140 iirc. The new all-singing, all-dancing ones will be double that I reckon.

I kept it past 3 years and one day it started acting up. Turned out to be water ingress on this tupperware box full of PCB in the back door. It was something to do with the aerial but it affected the doors opening etc etc. Cost me £300 for a new one. They told me it only happened on estates as it was in the back door. On a saloon it was in the boot so it didnt get wet............isnt that a design fault
Anyway got rid and bought another Merc

Why? And to make sure I'm being clear - WHY??? If you can't park, you can't drive. If you can't drive, why do you own a car?

I'd say the author of the article agrees with you.

RCP can only be engaged if vehicle is positioned centrally in front of the selected parking space, while the distance the vehicle is allowed to travel in driverless mode when entering and leaving the parking space is limited to 1.5 times the length of the car. Gimmicky? Surely. Useless? I think so - unless you're a parking attendant who has to fit as many cars next to each other as possible, in which case, you might actually find it super handy

I did that. Used to wonder whether selling it again (in 1977) had been wise. Now I am certain it was a mistake.

Remote parking? They're all at it now . BMW's latest 7 series will park itself in your garage on command, but I agree it's a totally unnecessary function - they build stuff into vehicles simply because they can, and it allows them to put more "Consult your Authorised Dealer" messages on the dash [and in the handbook too ].

And they call it progress.........

Iirc, it's called the 'diversity aerial' and yes, nothing's cheap on these when the Dealers get involved. Did you try for a goodwill contribution, given the age? Often BMW make a payment [usually limited to the parts cost] if you have FBMWSH.

Once it was out of warranty I had it serviced somewhere else (half the price). I also had it re-mapped up to 300 and odd BHP for towing the caravan. They wont even talk to you when you do that. It had to go back for a recall (some fire risk) so I took it and when I went to collect it they said that the brakes were no good, the tyres wanted changing etc etc..........yet the computer said there was 30,000 miles remaining on the brakes. I told them to "go away" so then they wanted me to sign away their liability (go away again)
Thats part of the reason I wouldnt have another BMW.........and the gearbox starting acting up at 30 odd thousand miles.

Ive had three E Class Mercs 03,55 and 13 reg..........never a moments problem

Just got two new keys for my lexus - £9 from ebay( inc. delivery) for both.
£5 each to have cut (stantons diy just up from st james' hospital in leeds).
No electronics/chip-have to transfer from old key.
"Chips" can be obtained from same era (98-2004 ish) toyotas as well as lexus. Theyre usually 15-50 quid at the scrappy
The *car* is reprogrammed to açcept the new chip, as long as you already have a working chip.
That can be diy-d, and up to 5(?) can be active- i keep one in the safe "just in case"

£400 +

Full set of locks inc. keys and ignition barrel for the transit - £25 new off the bay. No idea about replacing the transponder/ecu bits tho.
