I have just wasted an hour of my life...I think.

I am just wondering if this job HAD to be that accurate? It seems as if a job like that would cost a small fortune. Ok so it was for his Dad but am I missing the point??

I think he was showcasing his mini pallet system that he uses quite allot on the mill. But you wouldn't make it just for that job.

One of my pet hates is "How to" videos with either and or both a minute of crappy homemade title sequences or 5 minutes of preamble before the nitty gritty.
Some of the worst ones are the product review videos where they spend 5 minutes discussing the packaging that it has come in!
I can read an A4 sheet of precise instructions in about 30 seconds, if your video to do the same takes 10 minutes I ain't interested.

EDI-Explanation Demonstration Imitation -the army instructors mantra.tell em about 1 small bit, demonstrate it, explain common faults and let em copy it, put em right on any mistakes, move on to next bit.
Get to the point and get em doing it-OK I know its not as easy as that in a video, but maybe it could be broken up so folks could see a bit, go away and do a bit, then watch the next bit and so on.
And then there is old CLEM- Confidence, Leadership, Enthusiasm, Manner- confidence comes from knowing your subject, leadership comes by not boring the pants off your students by waffling etc, enthusiasm (not american style thank you) convinces them the crap kit is the bee knees ( only joking) and manner makes them think your their mate giving them good advice and that you are approachable if they have a question.
The gentleman in the video appeared to be slightly bored, I lost interest when he went off camera to fetch bits-poor preparation- so even if I knew what he was talking about I would have missed it.
He is not to blame though-he is a craftsman not an instructor- some great craftsmen make average teachers, some average craftsmen make great teachers-just the way it is.
Shame really, as I don't have a lathe or any machines like that but I'm always impressed by what blokes turn out on them.

It's not ine of Tom's best videos, I really enjoy watching some of his stuff but agree they can be overly long.

Yeah doubleboost is good, especially the metal casting, and he is a cyberman ya know. Tubalcain is good too so have a look at his stuff.

I watched the whole vid. lol I actually was happy that I was learning all the way through one thing or another.

My comment was more aimed at was the precision really necessary? or was it technique he wanted to show...

Someone else i subscribe to is Pete Williams, in the vids below he makes a beautiful bike tank with very basic tools and shows how he stretched his commer van to accomodate his drag bike.

I rang our VOSA area bloke up for guidance
I will never forget his words
" John, a lad has just pulled up outside your house on this , he it taking your 17 year old daughter for a run"
Just test it with this in your thoughts

So you basically told him to get stuffed then i am guessing . I wonder how many accidents and deaths are caused by shoddy customising.
