loose hammer heads and the recent hot weather

anyone else had this issue, Ive got some hammers that Ive had for years, and 3 of them have now got slightly loose heads. are they likely to become tight again when the humidity goes up again and nothing to worry about.

My dad's solution, and it works for me when I need it - bucket + water + hammer

Although I can remember the last time I needed to do it - 20 yrs maybe.

Rough the end grain up with sand paper

Linseed oil into the hole in head, if there is space.

If not soak in a pot of linseed oil.

With the yard brooms I tell them to stash them with the heads in a tub of water during summer, as I'm fed up with keep having to fix 'em.. I'd prob just do the dump it in water for a bit with hammers too.

Here’s my workshop tub of linseed oil,I’ve been replacing hammer handles since I was 22,although tight for the first month or two,they ,mostly loosen with use,never get that with the manufacturer one from new,hues they have a better technique and pressure,hard to get serrated iron wedges now,no problem with the wood ones though.

Here’s my workshop tub of linseed oil,I’ve been replacing hammer handles since I was 22,although tight for the first month or two,they ,mostly loosen with use,never get that with the manufacturer one from new,hues they have a better technique and pressure,hard to get serrated iron wedges now,no problem with the wood ones though.View attachment 404309

My local diy shop has boxes or assorted serrated iron wedges.
I tend to turn up serrated tubular ones though.

I 're handled my first hammer reasonably recently but have probably done 10 in the last year so will be interesting to see what happens with them.
Looks like I'd better be buying some linseed oil!
