Loose bearing fit

I’m rebuilding another sealey grinder. This must be w different model because it’s not as well made.

anyhow someone tried regressing the bearings before. Rather than replacing.
I’ve gone to fit one of the new bearings and it’s tight on a portion of the bearing journal, but loose when it butts up to the shoulder.

I’m yet to Mike it, but what are my options?

I’m thinking bearing fit if it’s only a few thou.

Loctite bearing fit? I’ve never used it but heard good reports of it.

You can sometimes knurl a shaft if it's slightly undersize (Or peen it with a load of centre punch marks), I wouldn't do it on anything too precision-y but I'm sure it would be fine on something Sealey.

You could try dimpling the surface with a centre punch, or knurling.

Used bearing fit a few times in the past, works very well but I don’t think the clearance was as big as that in relation to the diameter of the spindle, it may have been 4-5 thou clear on something 4-5”. The book specs look promising though

Score the shaft with a centre punch

I wouldn’t rough up the shaft on anything that runs at even moderate speeds the bumpy interrupted surface somehow transmits into the bearing and will shorten its life.

Yeah roughing it with a centre punch isn’t an option becauss of the concentricity of the bearing In relation to the bearing on the other end of the shaft and the armature.

4thou shouldn’t be too big an issue I wouldn’t have thought. If it runs and works but the bearing goes again I’ll have the shaft built up with spray weld and machine it back down to 20mm.

Bearing fit is very good, I have also used the high strength retainer with excellent results.

The bearing retainer is good stuff.
I'd use that in conjunction with some centre punch marks on the shaft to try and keep it centralised nicely.

just use retainer or bearing fit.....
some will take upto 15 thou out.....long cure time tho....
never center punch anything now.....it was almost OK in the old days.....
but now we have BETTER....

just the Loctite. its going nowhere unless you heat it up with a blowtorch to remove

Punching would align it better than filling a gap with a bonding agent. I'd say easier/more convenient, not necessarily better.

A wrap or two of baco foil combined with bearing retainer works well, just allow plenty of setting time in a warm place before use.

Isn’t there a special product in different thicknesses specific for that application?
