Looking to Mig stainless....

Galv is realy cheap by comparison - you pay for the weight of the item so don't do it too thick
In its newly done state of galv I think it would sell every bit as well as stainless
For a modern look planter try ali checker plate. It's a bit chav but there are plenty of chavs about
Ali has the plus that it's easy to cut although your into AC tig or spool gun mig it is fast to spool gun together mind

Mate of mine and, diving buddy, bought a livaboard boat for diving and, of course, the ability to moor up at any area for a good few days. He had it stored at a local boatyard, which allowed all year working, as stored boats were undercover. One day I popped down to measure up for a fab job, Keith, boat owner was over the moon, as he engaged the boatyard to manu stern diving platform and ladder for entry back onto boat.

SS tube work was very good, welding was pure cac. There was a mig plant at boats stern, I asked Keith is this was the plant used to weld platform, which it was. I dropped down to look at gas used for welding up, it was of course the wrong spec gas. On the behalf of Keith, I spoke with yard owner, outlining the error. I was asked to leave and not return.....lol.
It was obvious lots of mig SS work had been completed using wrong gas. Ladder and platform corroded around welds fairly quickly. I ended up making Keith a new one, which is still operational.

Moral of story, get the parameters correct prior to commencing hot work.

Considering what the item was doing I should say it wasn't a job he should have been on with anyhow without the right knowledge.
Some boat welding is shocking but in theory it should all be crack on

Fortunately, not all small yards are the same.

Edit, OP may get away with using what gas he has, application is far different from marine gear.
