looking to buy a 150mm 240v random orbit sander

lol quite specific then. wondering can anyone offer recommendations. Want to go 150mm cos the pads are easily got here and cheap as chips, plus i have a load of them. however this might be a silly idea? maybe a 125mm unit would be fine.. im unsure.

I bought an air sander, but it turns out the air tank in my compressor is only good for 40 seconds sanding, and then i have to wait for it to refill, which is far from ideal and the compressor is so noisey.

am restoring a truck at the mo, so thats what its for.

currently am looking at bosch gex units, they are quite expensive though. Might splash out... Sanding ive always found painful so a decent sander actually seems like a good thing to buy.

If you want the best festool do a nice 15 mm with a geared head... pricey but very ppwerful

the bosch unit i was looking at is roundabout 400 euro, whereas this metabo unit seems to have all of its functions for 200 euros (it has a turbo button...). 200 seems like a realistic price point for me

here are the specs of the 2 units... what does it all mean.. i dont know, but they look like they do roughly the same job to me

Having had the metabo I would probably go botch, spindle in the metabo I had was replaced 3 times after it bent after getting knocked off benches

i'd steer clear of orbital mains sanders,too much pressure and they fail to do the job.

Grinder and Flap disc,or is that too heavy for the job intended?

I agree, they are basically too heavy for bodywork

Do you have a good pressure washer,Sir? wet sandblasting is the bees knees for paintwork and derusting.

Alls you need is a wet sandblasting lance and dried kiln sand,also takes the hard work out of sanding with a orbital jobby.

I have a friend who about 10 months ago purchased a Mirka ceros electric da, as the compressor he had at the time struggled to keep up with an air da sander. I know there not a cheap unit to purchase but he is delighted with it. He hasn't said that he's had any issues with it so far and it's had a lot of use

that mirka ceros is a sweet looking piece of kit. the electric ones tend to be bulkier indeed, that very much looks like the little air one i have at present.

regarding wet sand blasting and flap disks, sorry i should have been more specific with my description; currently im at the stage of prepping the cab for paint, so what i actually need is a sander for blending filler into the body panels, so a random orbit is what im looking for methinks

I haven't used it myself but it doesn't seem any different to any air palm sander with one exception it's a lot less noisy

well i went and had a look at some hardware shops that had some of the various models.

i found a place selling the 125mm disks in a pack of 25, various grits for 9 euros.

so that opened the gates to a 125mm sander. the 150mm jobbies were all quite heavy and I decided a bit overkill for what i want them for, as I'm not taking up panelbeating professionally.

so I bought a bosch pex 220 online for 55 euros (42 pounds or so) because i liked the feel of it in my hand.

am pleased. thanks to you all for your input.

I use a Mirka air powered, it's not till you use a Mirka tool you realise the differences, like night & day !!!
Because they are so light it makes blending and profiling so much easier.

thought id finish this thread with an update on the bosch pex 220 , i love it. Its light, and feels good in the hand. It can be used single handed. It only has one setting lol, on and off.
Its doing everything i ask it to with style, and im using it a lot. I like it very much.

I have the mirka ceros and hand on heart its the best tool i have ever bought . Iv tried air and imo Its is better that air . Im not even going to try and explain why , just try one. Its nothing whatsoever like the bulky ones in the 1st post

Thanks for the update ned, I was going to get a PEX220 as a replacement to my Erbauer 125mm da which I ended up using a lot when decorating the house, so now I want a new one for bodywork.

The 125mm units are much better than the 150mm ones, more finesse, easy to use one handed and because of the hole pattern extract more dust and end up sanding better than the 150mm units.
