Hi there ,
I was wondering if somebody in the mk area could come and show me some pointers on get a good weld with mig ,because I am repairing my vw t25 and I am having trouble getting consistent weld.
I am willing to supply beer/tea for all help provided thanks dazz
Sealey 150a mighty it,I mean I got it sizzling like bacon on a scrap piece of metal and the penatration seemed to be good ,but when I was welding underneath on the vans floor that seemed to change it started to spatter a lot and pop every now and then.
Cheers dazz
I cleaned up where I was welding but gas flow might of been wrong because at the mo I am using disposable co2 bottles with a on off reg so I find it hard to gauge gas flow.
Also does anybody know if the boc/folks zone offers is still on?
Because I would like to get a refillable bottle of argon mix?
Ahh that might well be it then, over this way you have Adams rent free cylinders. Will be cheaper than getting a BOC account I think, Weld air supplies in Dunstable does them..
Deans Bottled gas also does Adams cylinders..
PWP Industrial in Bedford does the ALbee cylinders.
Well I have managed to get a bottle of argon mix but now I am finding that my welder is acting weird ,it is making a zapping noise instead of the bacon sound.
I mean I get it set right on a scrap piece of metal but when I take it to my repair it is making an electrical zap if you no what I mean?
What could I be doing wrong?
All help appreciated thanks
I think after watching the wire speed setup clip in the how to section I think I have had the speed to slow(it was at about 6) ,so tomorrow I shall have a practice at getting it just right.
Well I have had another go on some scrap metal but the welder doesn't seem to be playing ball.
1) there seems to be a constant whisper of gas at the torch end so I opened it up and it seems to be coming from the quick disconnect where the pipe gas in,I have tried cut the pipe and re inserting it but it made no difference .
Do you guys think I should replace the torch or am I doing something wrong?
2)I got the wire speed set up to a bacon sound on a scrap piece of metal ,and the I started my practice run and I was still getting this zapping and the arc seem erratic what could be wrong?
Could it be a worn shroud ?
3) here are the pics of my practice run what do you think?
could you not just start on power setting 1 and turn the wire speed up as you weld. then go to next setting and do the same. surely you must hit the correct settings somewhere with this method. Usually once you hit the correct wire feed settings you never need to move them much, as the current adjusts itself to the job (well it does with my Portamig, I assume other Welders are the same ?)
Dont worry about welding stuff together until you get the right feel. You can easier do this by running welds up and down a piece of scrap. It is not essential to join anything at first.
good luck
You won't have the same model machine, but the principles remain the same.
As Zardoz says, once you get the torch running okay, do plenty of practice on the flat, on something like 3mm thickness metal or thicker, before trying to join anything up.
When you do get to the jointing stage, do short runs of an an inch or so on something like 2 or 3mm, so you get more confidence before going on to try thinner stuff.
When you try thin metal - sub 1.6mm - use the thin metal technique of short tacks to start with, spacing them well apart, then filling in between gradually to join them up. After awhile you will find you can make the tacks longer before blowing through; it's just a matter of practice and trying to learn technique.
Check your shroud is not full of crap/splatter. This is quite common when welding upside down under a car as the splatter falls down and into the shroud. This then shorts the shroud to the wire tip and then some (most ) of your power is going into heating the blob of weld that's shorting and not the wire onto the metal. Get use to this as is par for the course when welding up under cars. Get some tip dip as well because this will lessen the sticking of the blobs to the shroud.
