Looking for advice on tents

I often attend steam rally's sometimes the big lads make me stay and drink large amounts of Guiness
I used to sleep in my Citroen Berlingo (not bad at all)
This is not possible in the new car
I bought a 4 man pop up tent (not a cheap one)
It broke a pole , changed the tent same thing again
I dont mind spending 150 ish on something decent
Not to go camping just to sleep in without getting wet
The Wife occasionally joins me so a bit of room would be good ,
to get changed in ect

Have a look at the range of quencha tents from decathlon. They are nothing special, but for the price point they are well worth the wonga. Vango are also worth a look.

Do you want to be able to stand up in it.
Are you going to put it up on your own.
How much comfort is the other half going to expect.
Watch door design, those sloping on the side / front let water into the tent when opened in the rain.


See if anyone has any tent displays (Yoemans used to do them in Derbyshire) so you can see them - then check other suppliers prices.

I’ve used a Khyam Biker for the last 14yrs. Very quick to erect, and pack. As the frame work folds up like a dead spider.
Not cheap but will stand upto a hard beating. I’ve just done 1700mls round a very windy (force 7/8 on Islay) and wet Scotland, bolting two together to give a cooking/social area

We have a quencha four man tent, 30 seconds to put up and 2 min to stow away. Best bit is you can expand it into an eight man or bigger if you buy more tents the same, they zip together. We have had ours for a good five years and it’s been out in all weathers and never leaked. Always cleaned before it’s put back in the loft which probably helps.

Sound advice, and get a tent with an outer and an inner as they do make a difference when the temperature drops at night in the cheap pop up tents. Frame tents with inner bedroom liners are good but take some carrying about but if you are in a car it's no problem.

We have an inflatable tent, it's a few minutes work to put up, a pleasure compared to the previous poles and dozens of guy ropes tent that took ages, however I still prefer to drag my mobile roadblock into position given half a chance!

I was amazed at how cheap tents are. A group of us went off to LeMans a couple of years ago, we took a marquee!

Set fire to it at the end. Everything else was on fire anyway....

Get yourself a carp fishing bivvy and bedchair and you'll be set. They tend to use materials with higher hydrostatic head than normal tents.

Two man bivvy, not sure if that means girls aren't allowed.

In fairness many of the bivvys will take two bed chairs anyway at a pinch but you wouldn't be able to put your feet on the floor.

The big benefit is they are easy to erect and are very tough.

Tbh I expect a man of your calibre to turn up in a gigantic steam engine and build a shed (with a wood burning stove).

And take a lathe with you just in case...

Get yourself a 9 by 9 ex-army frame tent, okay the poles and corner pieces are a bit bulky but no guy lines required unless it's blowing a hooley. Get a suitable piece of tarp for a ground sheet and spend half a day with the sewing machine and you'll have a liner that keeps the bugs etc off you while you sleep.
<edit> I've just had a look how much they are going for these days flipping eck I never paid anything like that for mine.

Either that or just tow a living van behind your steam engine
