Earlier in the year elderly older friends of ours started to have problems with there lights intermittently tripping the day after it had rained.
Local Semi Retired Electrician was round numerous times (too many outside lights) and eventually diagnosed the fault as being the lights in the conservatory, by the kitchen doorway - 1 light to the left of the doorway, switch to the right (on old outside wall) and a 2nd light on the end brick wall of the conservatory. He isolated the lights and said he could not do anything more.
I was asked if I could have a look and see if I could help. Being a bungalow, it won't be too hard to trace the wiring. My heart sank when I saw that the feed in the loft to the lights ran down the inside wall of the kitchen - it's not original wiring, but added at a later date ie not clipped to joists - which now has a larder cabinet there, had hopped it might run down the cavity.
I suspected that I would find some very poor wiring done by either the kitchen fitters/conservatory builders.
This was what I found in the rear wall cavity (lower damage done by me removing cable) and it was a lot blacker before I disturbed the cable, but worse was to come.
Having gained access to the rear wall cavity - UPVC finisher, breeze block and a few strands of cavity wall insulation - I had 3 wires passing through from kitchen to cavity then through a hole into the end wall of the conservatory wall (cavity), one back out and down towards the floor (feed to other light). More UPVC finisher off and 2 bricks to get into end wall cavity.
WTF a 5 amp JB wrapped in insulating tape and then wrapped in a plastic bag with more insulating tape
I've run new cable from the switch and end wall light into the loft via the wall cavity (and will do the same for the back wall light when I get a pull tape) JB in loft and new cable all the way to the original fit JB on the lighting circuit. Light(s) work.
Why, why, why put the JB in the new (end) wall, if anywhere it should have been in the rear wall and just a feed to the light fitting.
Will be a couple of weeks before this is finished off as working on this depends on there health, my health and families visiting.
ALL left in a safe state.
