long leads

got to weld machine frame at work, but laeds on arc welder wont reach.
boss is ordering in some 5m leads.
will i need to increase amps etc to allow for voltage drop or anything?
only ever used short leads for welding.

should be just the same as long as the leads are substantial and rated to carry curent of the welder .5m isnt verry long

There are tables for welding leads, including duty cycle and increased thickness for long leads, over 15metres. Cable manufacturers and suppliers usually have them on their websites.

However, I agree with Brightspark, if your boss just buys some 5 metre leads at least rated for the max amps for the machine, (suppliers normally rate them 200 Amp, 300 Amp etc) you shouldn't have any problems and shouldn't need to change anything.

As BS says, as long as the leads are meaty enough 5 meters wont be a problem.

i know he said 5m ive never seen any welding leads half a meter in length . the leads on mine are 8 meters long

Long leads are great....until you need to pack them up. Arm ache

Put a set of dinse joiners every 10m.

yeh you want to have them in about 10m sections buy 35-50mm leads they will do for most applications. i recommend you have your tongs on some 30-35mm cable just as a 3m whip or so because youll find holding up 50mm quite hard work especially if your doing all overhead!
BTW - iv never seen 500mm leads! lol hope its not an old oil filled oxford your having to drag behind you! haha unlucky!
with regards to asking about if you have to change amps, just play it all by ear if you arc up and its no good just adjust your set! i always try and encourage people on here to forget what the amp range on the packet or weaving how you think you should be doing it by the book etc... do everything by how it feels and how it lays down

Folks, these are 5 metre leads, not 50 metre leads. If the boss has been halfway sensible and not tried to shave every penny off buying the leads, I don't see any problem.

With a new setup and an important job it would be an idea to run a rod or two on a bit of scrap to see if any tweaks were needed before tackling the machine.
