Now I agree with the comfiness of the V70 although my average was 58 - 60 mpg (2.4D).Volvo V70, or the saloon/coupe/awd versions.
2.4 diesel. Early 2000's.
40mpg, fast, safe, forgiving, comfortable, got road presence but no body bothers you, few faults if you use good diesel.
DIY service is viable.
Orthopedic seats, and heated. The seats are just the best. The best.
Then a defender with retrimmed original seats.
I've found the VW stuff to cause back ache after long journeys.
I wouldn't call it fast though! Immensely practical, frugal, comfortable, bulletproof, easy to drive... Yes.
Fast... No.
I've got a 570 mile round trip Monday/Tuesday in the 535D estate. Now that's pretty quick, reasonably practical, not frugal, slightly highly strung & easy to drive (apart from the tramlining).
I've not gone that far in it in one slog yet so comfort TBC.
