which I think I am going to struggle to do when it has a automatic decompression for hand starting. I'll dig to see if I can find the workshop manual to see if it has more info, to see if a compression test can be carried out, without a compression test its impossible to know.
probably a wise tactic to make a daft 16 year old not go mental with easy start!! I bet in the wrong hands it could do some damage!I know, but as a spotty 16 year old apprentice I sucked it up!
Stick a bit of oil down the injector hole, spin it over a few times. Let the oil seal the rings kind of thing and try it again. So after giving it a squirt of (not easy start) stuff slightly flammable it does run, going by a previous reply does this indeed confirm engine rebuild or is there still a possibility there is a fuelling issue? not an easy question when your not looking at the thing I guess.
Too right.probably a wise tactic to make a daft 16 year old not go mental with easy start!! I bet in the wrong hands it could do some damage!
The engine in my van had been parked up for about a year and the fuel lines had been messed with so there was air in the system. You are now seeing similar results to what I saw, the more times I spun it over - the closer it got to running without help. Eventually it ran fine.So after giving it a squirt of (not easy start) stuff slightly flammable it does run, going by a previous reply does this indeed confirm engine rebuild or is there still a possibility there is a fuelling issue? not an easy question when your not looking at the thing I guess.
Does it restart easily once warm?So after giving it a squirt of (not easy start) stuff slightly flammable it does run, going by a previous reply does this indeed confirm engine rebuild or is there still a possibility there is a fuelling issue? not an easy question when your not looking at the thing I guess.
It will break piston rings. In a worn engine the ring lands will be worn and as the ether detonates it knocks hell out of the top ring, in particular. Bradex, with lots of ether is likely the common culprit.that's bunk. its simply that a worn engine that needs it will never get more compression, so it will always need it. some people are rather too good at confusing causation with correlation...

Some of the Old Ford Transits had an ether cartridge installed at point of manufacture they were so bad at starting even from new . I remember my dads fleet of BMC lorry’s were so bad at starting ,the driver held a piece of burning rag over the inlet manifold while cranking some of them from newthat's bunk. its simply that a worn engine that needs it will never get more compression, so it will always need it. some people are rather too good at confusing causation with correlation...

I have cleaned the tank and put new fuel in, I had it running of my spray can...... it never picked up on its own fuel, I'll give it another go today though to see.Does it restart easily once warm?
I'd let it run for a while to get nice and warm (under load if possible), and ensure fuel is well circulated so any air works it way out, then leave it to cool down and retry it.
It could be a mix of being sat for a while, old fuel, and the fuel system being disturbed.
You may find that now it's been run, it'll be fine.
I have changed to oil and it was pretty thick, but yes wondered if its a fuelling issueStick a bit of oil down the injector hole, spin it over a few times. Let the oil seal the rings kind of thing and try it again.
Easy start or similar ignites at much lower compression than diesel. When it did run what was the exhaust like and how long did it run. A bad injector not atomising the fuel could be an issue, but if that was the case your sump oil would be smelling of diesel.
no blanked the leak off lines , and it is getting fuel as when I forgot to put one back on the tank is was reminding me with diesel making a mess. Not sure whether you blanked off the pump return/bleedoff or not, if you have it can with some pumps play havoc with the case pressure and mess with the timing/fueling. Returns are normally calibrated.

I will keep working on this, but yes, good point there are 6.5 hp petrol engines on facebook for £60 that would save a lot of wasted time..... yes it is for occasional use so a perfectly good alternative.Single pot Lombardini (LD6 or similar IIRC)? 20-odd years-old.
I used to see these running at 3000rpm on portable generator sets back in the day.
Tbh they aways gave the impression of being a bit.... cheap and built to a price. I always had the feeling that they'd not do big hours before wearing.
From that time (25 odd years ago) you had a choice of 1 pot air-cooled diesels, mostly....
1. Honda GD411 (pricey but good)
2. Lister A Series (AB1, AC1, AD1). If starting handle only, then a nasty workout to start (you needed to be an athlete with the strength and speed of Dolph Lungrens W***ing hand to get one going, AB1 esp. Good once going).
3. Yanmar L70/L100. IMO the pick of the bunch cost/build quality. Expensive spares though.
4. Lombardini LD6. As said. (There was also a monster LD9 1-cyl - I'm pretty sure even ole Dolph would struggle to pull start one of those!
If the compressor is occasional use (& the Lombardini is goosed) - would a petrol Chinese Honda GX340/390 clone perhaps be the cheapest & easiest way out??
I thought that you had had it running on it's own fuel.I have cleaned the tank and put new fuel in, I had it running of my spray can...... it never picked up on its own fuel, I'll give it another go today though to see.
no never manage to get it running...... but it did run for a few mins in reverse, stopped it pulled it over and away it went for 10s of seconds then died to a stop. lidls chain cleaner is way easier on it than the tin of easy start I went and bough this morning, and half the price.I thought that you had had it running on it's own fuel.
Is it smoking at all?
