Anyone know how to go about building a multi way head for a splitter? hav seen some on sale and they cut down on splitting time quite a lot but would rather make one.
First trial run showed up all the flaws from what should have been a simple project!!
The power and speed the ram puts out is mental, even with the digger on tickover it can split a good size ring, but over engeneering should have been the way to approach it, though i did use a hardened sheet steel used to make bomb proof military stations, that i had lying about for most of it.
I will have to at least double up on the soft mild steel 'I' beam before i think about adding a cross cutter lol
Things to do when i get the design right will be adding a quick hitch attachment so it is connected to the digger to make it portable, a work top to hold the rings and split wood, a cross cutter and maybe even a 10ft or so conveyor so as i can cut on site and load my lorry in one go!
(the wood is beech and around 16 inch dia)
The saw horse is effective though...

very nice would of thorght it could do with a bit on braceing behind the blade but i dont know what you split, we split big trunks of oak can get 3 face cords in 6 hours now
suprised you havent bounted the blade on the ram end and atached it to the stick/ dipper so you can lay aload of cut logs on the ground and spit a load without geting in and out of the cab and reduceing run time on the digger
Ghound, how does the green machine work, the one with handle bars. I'm slowly but surely working my way through some rounds of Ash with a maul, bloody hard work, need to look into something far simpler than brute force!!!
Cheers...........
